How are the 2006 Ramon Allones Gigantes?

This is a favorite of mine. I'm halfway through a box of JUN05 that are simply tremendous. I only wish I'd gotten two boxes. Rich, with all the nutty and fruity sweetness that make RA one of the great marcas.

I've smoked a lot of excellent '06s, including some good RASS. Anybody have any experience with the 2006 RAG's?

I have been disappointed with the 2006 versions I have tried. Insipid compared to previous years.

I smoked the box of RAGs I had (SVF MAY 05), and they were nothing short of fantastic, just like shrink described. I absolutely LOVED them.

I tried a few loose sticks from the local tabacconist (06, cant remember the exact code) and they were a disappointment. The draw was weird: you could draw, but it wouldnt result in any significant amount of smoke getting into your mouth. You could tell that the taste was in there somewhere, but even a huge mouthful of smoke was not enough to get any significant amount of smoke or flavour. There didnt seem to be any holes or cracks in the wrapper like I first thought, and the cigar stayed that way all along. I wonder what could cause this. I smoked 3 cigars that were like this, and a friend smoked one which was identical. Very strange. Any ideas?

Rob, did you try these lately? I have a hand full of singles in my humidor that I had a lot of expectations!

Should I just leave them sleeping and hope that they come around?

Claudius, I had a similar experience with a RAG about a year ago - nice draw, but

little smoke. I noticed a small hole in the foot of the cigar, which as the cigar burned,

showed itself to be a "channel" running the length of the cigar.

I've had one or two cigars since with this "channel", with the same result.

My 06's are coming along just fine but I must say my favorite so far of the RA line is the Estupendo RE Asian 06....those suckers rock big time

but the RAG is def a killer churchill

You mean a "channel" in between the wrapper and binder?

Do you remember the box code?

No - through the filler, slightly off center - approximately 2mm in diameter, running

the length of the cigar. As if a skewer had been poked from the foot to the head.

Sorry, it was a single.

Colt I have had quite a few CC's with that "channel". They are wind tunnel smokes with very little flavor or smoke output. It is in the contruction and I have no idea how the hell that happens. It sucks though.I had one with 2 distinct channels running the entire length. I was going to take a pic of it and post it but just said the hell with it. The ash itself shows the holes. They aren't worth moking like that.

I concur one hundred percent - they are a lost cause.

Well, that's interesting... I've not had that often at all. This is the first time I really notice it.

Thanks Rob, let us know how it smokes!

» The RAG is a Double Corona, not a Churchill.

»

» I smoked a 2005 version last night that was outstanding.

Churchill - 7" x 50

Double Corona - 6 ¾" x 49

If I took the bands off..... one in each hand and held them 3 feet from your face you would never know the differance

In the lexicon of Havanas:

Churchill (Julieta 2) = 47x7

Double Corona (Prominentes) = 49 x 7 5/8

A noticeable difference.

Stickman, that may work with your wife, but...

Sorry I couldn't help myself. :-P

LOL! :-D

Rob, have you been able to complete the aforementioned assignment for us or did Lisa et al disturb you during work again? ;-)

!LOL!

Will post a full review Monday but I wouldn't rush out to buy a box.

I tried a 2007 which was good without being great. I have had too many 2006 disappointments in the RAG that I couldn't face one again. I have had some good early 2006 RAG but nothing good since MAR06.

Thw 2007 has me asking the same question. WHERE HAS THE FULL BODY GONE? Where is the rich stewed fruits, the hedonistic richness?

What I had on Friday was a good DC. Creamy, enjoyable. It just wasn't any Ramon Allones Gigantes that I can remeber.
