Colt45 Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 I had opportunity to smoke two cigars today........ First up, a Bolivar Corona Gigantes from '03. A core of supple leather, with earthy tobacco a secondary characteristic - some fruit highlights. Totally integrated and completely balanced. Silky smooth. To my palate, everything a great cigar should be. To use human characteristics, masculine and utterly confident, with an impeccable pedigree - but nonchalant and without airs. I waited all winter long to smoke one, and was rewarded in spades. Intoxicating. Second cigar later in the day - a Partagas SD4 - I acquired these in August '05. I've tried and tried again - the particular samples I have just show nothing - air mixed with a little tobacco. I believe the members who love this cigar, and take into consideration my own experience with different year production of the Partagas SduC No.1, but I just have not experienced a good one - and I can't see what I have left coming around. But, any day I can smoke two cigars is a good day. :-)
El Presidente Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Great reviews and a great day ......two cigars!!!!!! You amateur Your description of the Boli is the CG at its best. Faultless. The D4 is a connundrum. I had a great one not too long ago which I reviewed but I have had your own experience time and time again.
greenpimp Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 I agree wholeheartedly. I have a box and a half left of 03 BCG's, and love them dearly. Big and complex and balanced. The PSD4...I haven't had a really good one for almost 4 years. That box of 02's were eye openers to me, the first cigar I smoked until I couldn't hold it anymore.
olotti Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 My thoughts mirror yours exactly about the PSD4's. I've been sitting on a box from 05 that right out of the gate were to me awesome, white pepper, tobacco, and a taste I liken to honey barbecue sauce, just great, that lasted about 6 months and now they're dead. I've gone back and tried samples with many months of rest in between and I keep getting what you describe, air and some tobacco taste the last one I had about a month ago and was greeted with the same flavorless air that I have become used to when smoking these., truly, truly, disappointing. I hope these come around but after all these samples I'm guessing the best of these left along time ago but I hope not, now the BCG on the other hand is dynamite I was thinking about breaking some out after a long winters nap.
Mel Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Colt have you smoked one of the D4 Reserva? Now that is a real cigar. I agree about the regular line D4 that they are not always a cigar to bragg on. I feel the same way about the P2. I think Rob sold me the shitty ones meant to be pawned off on Ken.
Colt45 Posted May 11, 2007 Author Posted May 11, 2007 » Colt have you smoked one of the D4 Reserva? No! You keep asking me, and I keep saying no - I can't help but feel you are taunting me with these D4 reservas......... I'll just keep savoring these guantanameras.. » two cigars!!!!!! You amateur 'tis true..... I can't compete....
