Ken Gargett Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Decided I had better fire up one of these. I had heard the stories of mixed quality from around this time but if the rest of the box is as good as this one, then I will be a very, very happy man. Stunning. The construction looked fine. Smelt cold, the cigar was quite pungent with hints of leather, a lot of talc, quite strong talc which was rather pleasant, and hints of the character that Len Evans used to refer to as emanating from old ladies’ handbags. Opened quite richly with good fruitcake notes. Despite the age, the cigar was still quite tight and the flavours were more powerful than expected. Lots of spice, nutmeg and dense smoke (so good was it that sitting here writing, I have the strongest urge to fire up another). It needed a little attention right at the start to ensure it was even but settled quickly. The flavours moved into lovely coffee, mocha and toasty choc notes. There were flavours tending more to the honey end of the spectrum rather than the grassy/herbal notes that one might have expected from a Cohiba. There really was wonderful complexity. It continued as a tight smoke with a very slow burn but not one needing attention after the start. All was in balance. This was a seriously good cigar (I don’t expect to smoke many better) and the flavours increased towards the finish. It certainly lasted longer than the average CoRo and left me with seriously burnt fingers, a very long aftertaste and a real buzz. 96-97.
Professor Twain Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Great review. Having had these young, I can imagine the potential with time for them to mellow. Now I just need the patience to age a box for 7 years... May have to put one in my Czarador.
stever Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Thanks for the great review! I'm really starting to like the CORO more and more.
Freefallguy Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 These are without doubt my faves... though I have none so well aged. I'm jealous.:crying:
strayvector Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Thanks for the review, Ken. I just had one over the weekend and it is one of the tastiest cigars I have had. Mine were from '01 and the only drawback of the cigar was the crooked burn that I had to fight all the way to the final inch. Damn thing was sooooo good that I burnt my lips on the last puff.
