Cam Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Brought some more Cuban Davidoffs, but I am in Southern France and haven't my humidor, is the wine basement a suitable place for storage, do bats eat cigars :-( I was recommended at one time it's an excellent place for cigars, and in New Zealand this is where I keep my non cubans, but for my Davies I really don't want to make a mistake, been collecting for years but have never been in this situation, and I will worry about them all the time if someone doesn't say yes or no right now. Matthew Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 The standard response is: Send them to me and I'll store them for you. ;-) Honestly, the space is probably great for temperature, and likely reasonable for humidity, but I'd invest in an incredibly cheap humidor to ensure they are cared for. Keeping them in a humidor will insulate them from the swings in humidity which come with rainy weather. Also, by keeping them in a sealed box, you don't have to worry about bats, mice, etc. If you don't want to buy a humidor, use some sort of well sealed box.
Cam Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 Thankyou for that well informed response that I need a humidor lol.. but do bats eat cigars.. I dont know anything could happen, thanks for your help, I think ill just put them in a plastic container with a sponge or kitty gels. Do bats eat tabacco I know theyre notorious fruit eaters and some suck blood.. Cam - I actually just found la good site online for humidors for 69 euros, probably not top quality but still the cigars will be kept in a nice 16-17 degree environment i only need to worry about humidity

They do **** on cigars though, so I would cover them well... :-)
bobsled Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 tupperware would work in a pinch, plus of course some type of humidification device....
greenpimp Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 The wine basement can be an excellent place or cigars. Often very consistent year-round humidity. (A friends is ideal all the time, stable and low 60s RH.) I would check what that RH is before going crazy with humidification devices. I would definitely put them in some sort of cainet or box, however, to avoid unwatned odor, dust, and curious guano makers;-) .
Ken Gargett Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 don't take this the wrong way but only a kiwi could ask if bats eat cigars. are you sure you are not related to rob? i reckon that if it is a wine cellar that is in good nick, perfect. the humidity should be ideal and the temp low. i have my good wines all off site in professional storage and it is where i keep my cigars as well, at least those that are not for immediate smoking.
Cam Posted March 19, 2007 Author Posted March 19, 2007 » don't take this the wrong way but only a kiwi could ask if bats eat cigars. » are you sure you are not related to rob? lmao probably im italian aswell but then again.. lets just say I enjoyed with very much curiosity reading what rob had to say about your little underwear stunt.. I have a terrible, terrible image burned into my mind forever, kind of like a disaster really.. and thankyou ken for the piece of advice you decided to leave at the end lmao, I got a nice little bag with a built in rechargable humidification pouchg which hold 18 churchill sized cigars, they are now in the cellar. have a nice day, elephant man :-)
