jaylax5 Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Great review... I had my 1st one this morning with a good cup of coffee. It was a very similar experience...mild creaminess throughout and very tasty. A little tight at first, but it loosened up very quickly. I wished it wouldn't end.

I recently got a cab from '98. They are some ugly cigars! However, they are very good with lots of tea and creaminess to it.

Van55 Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Got 10 of these in singles recently and let them adjust quietly in my humidor for several months. Not sure of the date, but I suspect it is the same as or close to the one reviewed by Rob, as it they are from his warehouse. I finally enjoyed mine last evening in the company of a good friend from Louisiana who was in Virginia on business. Ambiance and good company can add a lot to one's enjoyment of a cigar. At the same time, the abiance and good company can distract the mind from its full attention to the flavors and aromas one experiences from the cigar. In this case, both circumstances were present. Our preprandial smokes were 1997 VR Famosos, that were fabulous, complex, flavorful smokes with chocolate and coffee undertones. I expected the fresh little du Prince to be anticlimatic after dinner and the Famosos. I was amazed that this little cigar delivered tons of flavor, copious smoke and a sweetness on the finish that I have not experinced in many cigars. du Gourmet are nearly as sweet and the first third of a '04 BGM was a rival. Because of conversation and beer, I can't be much more descriptive other than to say that I kept being distracted from good conversation by the thought that I need to get more of these before they become extinct.
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 After the Du Maire review the other day it was recommended that I review its bigger brother Du Prince. Length: 130 mm Diameter: 15.9 mm Ring gauge: 40 Mareva I have fond memories of the 1997/1998 Du Prince cabs which I opened spawning masses of white plume. These were some of the finest Mareva's I have had the fortune to enjoy. Then...just as you fall head over heels in love with a cigar, the quality changed and I struggled to find the same utility in subsequent years. Everyone I smoked I compared to the halycon boxes I remembered and the cigar I held in my hand always fell short. We stopped talking. We fell out of love and moved on. Don't get me wrong, I still had personal supplies of those great Du Prince but I ran out last year. The 2005 I tried were good but not great. So today brings me to Hoyo Du Monterrey Du Prince PTS March 06. Nice oily wrapper. sweet smell at cold, good but not outstanding construction. well bunched just slightly on the firm side. I cuban clipped the end and tested the draw. Ever so slightly firm...perfect. On the lips it was all butter or more accurately memories of when your mother would allow you to lick the mixing bowl of the bread and butter pudding she had just put into the oven. I lit the Du Prince with some expectation and almost immediately it did not disappoint. Blue, thick, viscous smoke emanated from the foot almost struggling to rise in the bright morning sun. This is what a great draw should achieve...the perfect burn rate mixed with great oil laden tobacco kept at the right humidity. On the palate was thick cream with a good dose of sugar. Quality tobacco was also present as the backbone but the cream coated the tongue in a way that could only be described as seductive. Onto the midpoint the Du Prince demonstrated poise and balance. Cream...luscious cream, tobacco and sugar/raisins. I was enjoying the cigar so much at this point that I put down my pen and spent the next 20 minutes focusing on the cigar. It had deserved this show of respect and it is something that I rarely do. I am sure many of you can identify with that moment in time when the cigar you are smoking reaches such a level of bliss and intrigue that you stop what you are doing and focus solely upon the cigar at hand. Getting now towards the final third and there were subtle changes occuring. It was becoming a tad fuller/stronger but yet no hints of bitterness. The cream was dissipating replaced with a mocha coffee core mixed with straight Cuban tobacco. I had my first panic attack that I only had 20 so minutes to go....I love it when a cigar can bring that feeling on Down now to the back end and the first hints of bitterness were showing through. Nothing brutal and still thoroughly enjoyable but my experience was so good that I did not want to muddy the waters of this memorable experience and so...I let it go out with an inch to go. 90/100 5/6 smokerings
PigFish Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Hey Rob! I am thinking that every cigar tastes better when you use that ashtray!!!
