a few wines, at colt45's urging

Wouldn't normally do this but I would consider it rude if I didn't accede to colt45's request for info on a few wines that some friends put together last night for a themed Burgundy evening. Rather pleasant, if very late, evening and I must say I am a little slow this morning (won't even mention the cowgirls except to say that I did pick the loss to the glorious skins as the beginning of the end for them).

Kicked off with Dom Ruinart 1996 and then an impressive Lanson Noble Cuvee 1997. Then an absolutely amazing Dom Perignon 1962. From the Oenetheque series so only disgorged in 2002 and fabulous. One of the best champagnes I’ve ever tried.

Then the white burgs. First bracket.

1982 Delagrange Bachelet Batard Montrachet

1991 Lafon Meursault Charmes (only Premier Cru of the night and clear winner of this bracket).

1991 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier Montrachet (first Leflaive I have been disappointed with but dodgy vintage and queries on storage).

Next bracket.

2002 Domaine Leflaive Batard Montrachet

2002 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier Montrachet - seriously good.

2002 Raveneau Les Clos - can see why there was so much fuss re this wine. All three of this bracket whipped the first lot.

3rd bracket.

2001 Sauzet Montrachet

2000 DRC Montrachet

1996 Drouhin Leguiche Montrachet.

These were spectacular but not sure I’d be keen to pay this sort of money. The DRC the white of the night. Brilliant and decades ahead but you would want it to be that for $1500-$2000 for the bottle. Others very good.

Then the serious wines -

2002 de Vogue Musigny - brilliant but possibly a little too New World.

1998 Leroy Romanee St Vivant - another star and marginally my pick of this bracket.

1993 Jadot Musigny - still with ages to go but wonderful.

Next bracket (and there was no spitting - there were nine of us so not as bad as it might sound).

1989 Rousseau Chambertin - wonderful but for one of the producers that I think are one of the best two/three in Burg and from this block of dirt and such a great year, perhaps should have been better (the 1990 is stupendous).

1985 DRC Grands Echezeaux - best Burg of the night (red or white). Spine tingling and so exciting.

1966 Bouchard Chambertin Clos de Beze - in amazing condition for its age.

Then to finish -

2001 Yquem - I have seen this three times this year and every time it has blown me away. I think it is the greatest young wine I have ever seen and may turn out to be the greatest Yquem of all time, not that any of us will be around to see.

1963 Sandeman Vintage Port - lovely finish.

Colt45, just complying with your request.

Now I need aspro, nurofen, berocca and sleep.

of modesty and decided to post.

It sounds like a stellar evening - are there people who really spit at tastings such

as this?

I don't like to admit it, but I'm quite envious. Now, back to my bottle of cold duck....

That is an incredible lineup of wines.....absolutely awesome!

As far as the spitting goes,no one really likes a spitter do they?:-D

So,did you burn any decent sticks when you were done?Have to bring out something good,I'd reckon...

i had brought along a few to share but we finished so late and most of the guys have not yet seen the light re cigars, so unfortunately, that part of the evening went unfulfilled.

i should say, for anyone wanting a good meal on the gold coast, that the dinner was held at absythe. have eaten there a few times and found it good but not memorable. last night was spectacular and one of the best meals i have had for a long time. one dish, the prawn carpaccio with caviar, was one i won't forget for many years.
