Hi

I just read about this brand called Guantanmera. Does anyone have information on this.

Here is what I found:

Habanos s.a. presents the world launching of a new cigar brand."GUANTANAMERA".

Its name comes from a song titled "Guajira Guantanamera", created in 1928 by Cuban signer and songwriter Joseíto Fernández and gained fame during the 1940s. Later in the 1960's the song was spread world-wide thanks to a version that incorporated stanzas from Jose Marti's Versos Sencillos.

The new brand differs from the traditional Habanos both in its product design and its commercialisation: theses cigars are manufactures in a modern facility belonging to the Cuban tobacco industry (ICT), using blends of leaves from Vuelta Arriba, the second most important tobacco-growing region in Cuba. "Guantanameras" mild flavoured cigars.

With an original presentation, rigid packs and packs of 5 and 10 units, the new brand comes in four vitolas:

PURITOS - This is the smallest size (106-mm. long and 10.32 mm. in diameter) which is why cigars of this vitola are called " little pure ones". It joins the family of small -sized cigars which Habanos s.a., began to introduce in its portfolio of vitolas last year.

COMPAY - This is the next larger vitola ( 123 mm. long and 15. 87 mm in diameter). Its name is typical Cuban expression used informally in eastern Cuba to mean friend or pal .

DECIMOS - This vitola is 134 mm long and 15.08 mm. in diameter. It is named for the ten-line verse form in which the song Guajira Guantanamera -the source of inspiration for the name of this brand- was written.

CRISTALES - This is the largest vitola (150 mm. Long and 16.27 mm in diameter) It comes in a protective transparent tube and is the perfect gift for a good friend. It is also presented in boxes of 25's.

The new cigars are cellophaned thus allowing a better preservation. Tips are already cut to facilitate lighting.

As a new product, "Guantanameras" are sure to be given a warm welcome in those market segments where the Cuban cigars have been not present so far.

After its launching in Dortmund (Germany) on September 14th, "Guantanameras" will continue be introduced in other markets as well as Canada, Mexico and Havana.

I have smoked a few of these (probably quite fresh ones) after I got them as freebies from a spanish vendor. They are without contest the most harsh, astringent and awful cuban cigars I have smoked. Nothing comes within a galactic mile of the Guantanameras. A classic dog rocket if there ever was one. So there, I've vented! :-)

A pal of mine was gifted a nicely presented gift pack of these from a woman who visited Cuba. Glass top and all... I felt so sorry for him - he would probably have done better with pesos cigars... They were as awful as my own Guantanameras.

I have put away my G's that remain and I do not intend to smoke them this side of 2010. If by some miracle they turn into smokable cigars by then nobody will be more surprised than me. :-|

There may be people who like them, and I must confess I'm curious to hear their opinion.

The above comments reflect every single account that I have read from people that have tried them. A machine Made cigar using sub-standard tobacco leaf as a price point grocery store equivalent to Philly Blunts. Personally, I think the leaf would be better used in cigarettes, but thats just my opinion.

These are truly bad. Not fair to even call these DogRockets.

One mans DogRocket is another man's inexpensive yard smoke but the Guantanamera is horrible.

Guantanamera is the closest thing you will find to domestic Cuban Peso cigars.

They are crap. Mild in body, insipid in flavour. They are a disgrace to the Cuban CIgar Industry and should be replaced.

Through the kindness of a BOTL I've gotten to know a bit on the internet, and briefly off of it, I had the opportunity recently to try a peso cigar. While it wasn't earth shattering, it was much better than the couple of Guantanameras I've tried...

The only reason I still have a few Guantanamera Compays still in one of my tupperdors is so whenever some moocher buddy of mine JUST HAS TO HAVE A REAL COOOOBAN CIGAR, I'll pull that out on 'em :-D

If I'm lucky and said moocher has a modicum of taste in tobacco....they'll never ask me for a Cuban again! :-P

I think you are unjust to Peso cigars, been smoking several bundles over the years...all have been way better then the handful of Guantanamera I've tried.
