Phailure Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 I've had a few cigars from a specific box and everyone seems to have tunneling problems. The tunnels usually are pretty big (in my opinoin). I'd approximate the diameter as 1/8". Is it possible that beetles caused the hole or is it more likely due to poor construction. None of the sticks have any holes in the wrapper or anywhere on the exterior indicating beetles. Also, this is '06 production so they should have been frozen at the factory. Finally, I keep them in a temperature controlled environment of approximately 64F. I have never encountered such severe tunneling problems and thought maybe they were caused by beetles. Perhaps some of the more knowledable members could provide me some insight? Thanks in advance!
anacostiakat Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 If there is no evidence of beetles, it is more likely a himidification problem.
Trevor2118 Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Have a look at this section on my web site [link]http://www.cubancigarwebsite.com/3a_packaging.htm#Cigar_Pests_&_Problems[/link] It is the larva that tunnel through the tobacco, it is the Beetles leaving the cigar (or tunnelling back in to lay eggs) that cause the external holes. The Larva may have been active before freezing. It may not be Beetles. Advise which cigars, box & date codes & pictures if possible for others to comment. Cheers link fixed

Colt45 Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 I had a similar experience (if I interpret you correctly) with a Ramon Allones Gigantes a couple of months ago. There was a hole of approximately 2mm in diameter at the foot of the cigar. This "channel" or "tunnel", ended up going the entire length of the cigar, causing a draw problem, and allowing very little smoke volume. I attributed it to a construction issue.
El Presidente Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Let's see a photo. I will get my white gown, gloves and bedside manner ready.

rafa Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 »put your cigars in the freezer 48 hours,I suffered the same trouble

El Presidente Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 » » That looks like Ken made sweet love to it! Looks a little large for a beetle hole ut alas difficult to tell. If there was no "Beetle dust" at the bottom of the box then I would chalk it down to poor construction. If beetle dust was present....then it was beetles.

Hrm... care to elaborate on this said 'beetle dust' Although... I kinda have an idea as to what it might be :-( Oh, and thanks for all the responses!
tigger Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 "Hrm... care to elaborate on this said 'beetle dust' " Lasioderma serricorne is small and voracious. It has to make room in its belly for more tobacco somehow. In addition, some of the dust is uneaten tobacco, I'm sure.
harwellplant Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 i have had several cigars with tunnels of that sort which, to me, is more indicative of poor construction as opposed to beetles. the most recent example i can recall was a punch punch last year before a titans game. it drew like a straw.
