I haven't received a telemarketing call in a while, but I would just tell them to wait one moment. I'd set the phone down and not come back for about an hour.

I usually ask them for a number that I can call them back on as I need to get my daughter away from the (insert child dangerous situation here). They usually say "I'll call back". Then I push a little harder "Look, I'll call you right back, and don't tell me you can't accept calls, you wouldn't belive me if I said that". Then usually I hear dialtone.

that is my usual thing. tell them that i'm just a visitor but i'll get the owner etc. especially annoying for them as they are on commission and if wasting time with me, costs them. often, i'll slip back every few minutes if not doing something else and tell them that they are almost there. had them sit there for about 15 minutes max.
