a few months back, we had a thread about these fish. understand worms a problem on the other side of the pond. asked about, as i had never seen or heard of it here. most people the same but a few of the guys at the tackle store mentioned that they did encounter it but it was rare indeed over here.

we still have no idea where they go once they head north of fraser. they have tried tracking etc, but nothing. lot of thoughts that they may head over to the west coast of the states but i think it more likely that they loop around and start back up our east coast next season.

what drives me mad about them is how they can suddenly go off the bite completely and stay that way for days. then bang, on again. but great fun especially on lightish gear. and fly - only ever got one on fly. the problem is that with those teeth (young ones nicknamed choppers and the name tailor comes from having a mouth like tailer's shears), need a new fly every strike.

» my mom used to stew the heads - one of the foulest stenches known to man.

i maintain that, if fresh and it really does have to be fresh, the flesh is some of the best eating around. superb. must be bled immediately. if not fresh then fish stew at best. if one has a good smoker, and knows what one is doing, these can be excellent as well.

as for your mum, i would prefer not to comment on the habits of any member's mother, no matter how strange those habits may seem.

have also seen fishing shows where the host declared tailor the best eating of all fish, though i'm not sure even i'd go so far.

Ken, no question - they are very good eating when fresh - I know some of our

members disagree (Austin :lol2: ).

The stewed heads in question were also fresh, but with nothing but water and the

fish head, the smell was nearly unbearable.

i must say that it not something i have encountered before, at least with tailor, and i have no great desire to. that, for me, will be one of those closed doors.
