El Presidente Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I know that counting is still going on in Virginia but it appears Republican control of both houses is likely to be gone. With 18 months until the next election can the Republican Party rebuild? Do they need Rudy Giuliani to have any chance of doing so? I have always been fascinated by US politics and how a party spends the last two years of its term fighting for re-election.
Jimmy2 Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Just out they have full control.:-D The Dems..
El Presidente Posted November 9, 2006 Author Posted November 9, 2006 » Just out they have full control.:-D I can see you are disappointed Jimmy
habanohal Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 As you can see that NEVER will a Independant win. They dont even give them a chance, not even on debates. So they dont even recognize the, I could go into my thoughts of the boulshit politics, but that could take a LONG time
dragon Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 <<< Is this the end for the Republican Party? >>> I thought that happened back when Bush became president
anacostiakat Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Actually with no clear cut majority it will probably be more like gridlock. No it is not the end of the Republican party by any means. Happy (blue) days are here again in old DC! [link]http://www.washtimes.com/metro/20061109-122544-3272r.htm[/link] :-D
cvm4 Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 It's not the end. I believe by the Dems winning that the American citizens were more then likely voting Dem just to go against the President and his policies and not necessarily for the Dems policies. IMHO
new2habano Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I'm a lifelong Democrat and while I am happy about the recent victory I am also saddened because unless we find a viable Presidential Candidate for 2008 this will be a great opportunity that was lost. I have never voted for a Republican in my life and I can say without question that I will not vote for Hillary Clinton to become the next President of the United States.
El Rushbo Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 » I know that counting is still going on in Virginia but it appears » Republican control of both houses is likely to be gone. » » With 18 months until the next election can the Republican Party rebuild? Typically, political reallignment (major shifts in the control of 2 of the big 3, House, Senate, and executive) lasts between 12-24 years. This is not to say this will be the case, but historically it has been the standard. As far as rebuilding, they don't need to. Many of those elected this cycle in the House, are social conservatives. I think this reflects US sentiment. Not a major shift in what is ideologically acceptable, rather a bold and clear break from the policies of the Bush administration. » Do they need Rudy Giuliani to have any chance of doing so? Giuliani is an example of what the R's must offer. A moderate Republican, with an "outside the beltway" mentality/image, and electoral votes from a state the R's would normally lose. Don't know if they'd be able to get NY, even with Rudy. The Dem.'s need to be careful with Pelosi. She is a fire-brand. If she sets the party off too far to the left, the Republicans won't have to do much work to get Ohio again. If they can also pick up Iowa, WV, Fla (which went big for another Republican Governor) and other moderate swing states, Pelosi could end up rebuilding the party for them. » » I have always been fascinated by US politics and how a party spends the » last two years of its term fighting for re-election. Academically, mid-term elections are a popular topic. Lots of data, trends, etc. to be studied. Interestingly enough, when power shifts in a mid-term election, progress will stagnate if the executive belongs to the other party ("divided government"). Just a few thoughts...;-)
Tiny Tim Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Give the democrats 2 years; they'll screw things up...more! :-P
kluck Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Not the end by a long shot, truth of the matter, it doesn't really matter who controls what, taxes will go up and more laws will be passed, I dislike both parties but dislike Republicans a little less.
tey Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 the question that really needs to be asked is: President Bush. Great president or...the greatest president that has ever lived? LMFAO
Mel Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I'm sick of the whole lot. Promises, promises just like a teenage boy in rut that will say anything to get what he wants. Bush has proven to be poor at adapting to needed change and his party now pays the price.m Let's just sit back and watch what the democrats do LOL.
cigardawg Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 » I dislike both parties » Nor am I an independent...can't find one of them that isn't crazy. I'm tired of the whole lot (reps, dems, inds, politicians and politics in general). Not a single one shows the common sense that God gave a turnip. After the voting here in VA on the marriage amendment, I actually considered leaving the state.
MarkM Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 » the question that really needs to be asked is: » President Bush. Great president or...the greatest president that has ever » lived? ONE of the greatest Presidents that has ever lived, IMHO.
1f1fan Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 It has been a very interesting week no doubt, especially for those of us here in the Commonwealth of VA. The republican party is not dead....just needed a good kick in the butt IMHO...and they got it. I just hope the dems don't mess things up too....honestly I don't trust any of them..Republican or Democrat! New blood is good....hopefully there will be a change in Washington....time will tell!
genevapics Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 » After the voting here in VA on the marriage amendment, I actually » considered leaving the state. What exactly happened in Virginia regarding marriage? Was this one of the *** Marriage Propositions? As far as the Republicans, I have to agree with several board members in that I believe the Dem vote was really a vote AGAIST President Bush and the Republicans. I am not sure people were really swayed by the Dems. That said, change is always welcomed in Washington, it's part of the political process. Looking towards 2008... man is it going to be Crazy & Fun! Anybody hear what the turnout was nationally?
CIGARHead Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I could be totally ignorant on this, but to me they're all shady. I mean, I know it takes more than a television commercial to sway a vote, but in these recent commercials they are ALL portrayed as money hungry, power hungry, and sometimes thieving SOB's. The commercials here in Florida were outrageous. I mean they were accusing one guy for the rape of a college inmate staying overnight in jail. Makes me sick.
Mark Twain Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Rudy Giuliani could be a great President. McCain might try for it, but he's generally considered to be hawkish on Iraq and public will for the war is on a steady decline so it's doubtful that he can snag the nomination. I really think this electin was about Iraq and only about Iraq. We had a hell of a time getting the stem cell research Admendment passed in MO. Still a lot of social conservatives out there, so I'd say the Republicans will come back in a big way in '08 if they have a vision that the American people are willing to buy. For now, the Dems have it. You're gonna see investagtions into alot of people, and Rummy probably left because he didn't want to spend all his time testifying before Congress.

TR Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 brace yourselves for do nothing governement.....can you say stalemate? All politics suck....when they have major swings in power in mid term elections, the next election brings it back to somewhat balance.....I hope the dems put up that dude from Illinois and that lesbian from New York........it will surely lock the whitehouse for another 4 years for the republicans.....I will say this, American politics is fun to watch.....:-D
dragon Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 » Give the democrats 2 years; they'll screw things up...more! :-P Could you please explain to me how that would even be possible? :-P
