Trevor2118 Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Australian Government Press Release The Federal Government will later today announce the re-establishment of the Metric Conversion Board to implement the Final Stage of metric conversion in Australia. The Board was dissolved in 1981 and responsibility for the completion of metrication was transferred to the National Standards Commission (which became part of NMI in 2004). The Government however has decided that the Final Stage Metrification will be best handled by the re-established Board. The new Board will also be authorised to prosecute those industries that are still showing reluctance to “metricate”, particularly the Real Estate Industry. However, the primary purpose of the new board is the introduction of the final stage conversion of Time. A final date for conversion has not yet been determined and this will be part of the responsibility of the new Board, to liaise with other nations (metric & non-metric) so that the eventual conversion is seamless. The conversion of time is a major change but the Government is satisfied that the benefits arising will override the changeover problems. The metric time system will have the second as its primary unit. This will avoid disruption in the scientific world as the second and the millisecond are the main time unit used. Units above the second will the metric minute (100 seconds), the metric hour (100 minutes) and the metric day (10 metric hours). This will avoid the need for am & pm, and military 24 hour clocks. Finally, there will be 10 months in a year (the Government has not yet decided which months will be deleted). A further benefit is that leap-years will no longer be needed. Fortunately, a lot of non-apparent groundwork has already been done by Governments & Industry Groups. For example, ever since 1981, all digital watches are capable of immediate conversion to the new metric time system, by simply system of button pushes, details of which will be made public before the final conversion date (the public is warned against random button pushing as an incorrect code could disable the watch totally). For people will analogue watches, the Government will offer a generous rebate for conversion, and will in the initial stages, make available a transparent new stick-on watch face for wrist watches and kitchen clocks. Regarding the Real Estate Industry, the Government is unwavering in its quest that the use on non-metric terms such as house “squares” and the land “acres” immediately cease, at to that end it has been decided that, as of today, all real estate agents licenses will be cancelled and only renewed after each agent undertakes a suitable training course. A training centre will be established in the Tasmanian West Coast wilderness area. The Government is confident that Australia’s population will welcome this change. The Minister in Charge :-D
