Thin -v- Thick Gauge Cigars...

Recommended Posts

Rob:

When you first got back from Havana, you talked about the overwelming numbers of Thick Gauge cigars being sold by Habanos. First, what do you (and or Habanos) define as a Thin/Thick gauge cigar. Secondly, and more importantly, what is the breakdown of thin -v- thick on the world market? Finally, are these numbers the same for the different regions around the globe?

On a different note, can you give us a breakdown of where cuban cigars stand in the world market? What percentage of cigars sold in the world market are cuban?

I will go into more detail Monday when I can access some information.

As a snapshot:

Thin guage cigars are considered sub 40 ring guage. Proportion of sales of thin guage cigars (excluding cigarillos, chicos etc) I will need to check but I would hazard a guess at less than 10% of total sales.

When talking the global market let's talk about premium hand rolled cigars. You are looking at over 80% Habanos domination outside of the USA. In the Asia Pacific the only other maker with a significant market presence is Davidoff.

It is very hard to look at market preferred sizes but I know that petit corona and corona are the largest selling Habanos in Spain while Robusto, Robusto and Pirimide are the largest selling cigars in the Middle East. Im Australia Petit Corona and Robusto top the sales. In the rest of Asia it is much the same with a higher proportion of Belicoso and Pirimide sales in Hong Kong.

It is the reason Altadis paid $500,000,000 for 50% share of Habanos s.a ;-)

Unfortunately for guys like me who love panetelas, they don't sell too well...hence Habanos doesn't ever introduce any new ones and the old models just keep getting cut :crying:

I'm with you BP, but I do like the fact that thin ringed cigars are usually easy to find with age on em.

If I were you I would just obliterate my credit cards and stock up on as many as you can afford. And when they DO get cut they go on death row and there is a mad dash to stock up and prices go higher and you sit back with 14 boxes, smoking and drinking, with a huge smile on your face.

» Anymore information regarding this subject Rob. I bring this up with

» regards to the Discontinued List. Thank you.

I have a meeting with Habanos marketing 7th and 8th of October so I will hold this over until then particularly given the news of the new discontinued list. I will also submit my proposal for new thinner guage cigars at that time.
