Cuba: any U.S. aggression would be costly

GENERAL of the Army Raúl Castro, Cuban first vice president, affirmed Wednesday (June 14) that the cost of any U.S. aggression against the island would be greater than what Washington is willing to pay.

The likewise minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) remarked on the Cuban people’s success in preparing its defense, and particularly congratulated the Western Army on the 45th anniversary of its founding.

Assurance of victory is based on the blood of the fallen and on the rivers of sweat of Cubans who have worked to bring about our main goal – preventing war, the leader said during a ceremony commemorating the Western Army’s creation.

"However, if the enemy dares to attack us, every corner of our country would become a terrible hornet’s nest that would result in a number of enemy casualties far higher than U.S. public opinion would be willing to accept," he warned.

Raúl, also second secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) said that after Bastion 2004 (the largest military exercise in Cuba in recent years, which took place late that year), "a qualitative leap was demonstrated in the nation’s defensive abilities."

The "War of the All the People" military doctrine is a reality today, he affirmed.

Cuba’s defense system is based on the "War of All the People," which means that protecting national territory is not entrusted solely to the armed forces, but to all of the population fit for defense.

It is that principle — that every Cuban has a place, a way and a means to confront any possible aggression — upon which the country’s defense is based.

The FAR minister commented that what President Fidel Castro noted during the Central Report of the 1st Congress of the PCC (December 1975) remains "valid and permanent."

At that time, the Cuban president said that "as long as imperialism exists, the (Cuban) Party, state and people will give their utmost attention to the services of defense."

Likewise, he affirmed that Cuba would never let down its revolutionary guard, because "history teaches with more than enough eloquence that those who forget this principle do not survive their error."

"And that is how it will be," Raúl emphasized, "so that we can always shout in the empire’s face, ‘¡Viva Cuba Libre!’"

During the celebration of the Western Army’s 45th anniversary, certificates of recognition were given to founding members and to generals and officers with outstanding service records.

The Western Army was created on June 14, 1961 with the mission of defending the country’s western region, particularly the capital. Raúl Castro noted the success of that Army mission, which he described as a "spearhead of the vanguard."

Lets see....Guantanamo and all the fun parties going on there....Fidels brother promising a continuation of communism after Fidel passes power...or, imo, it was probably the electricity being cut off to the US mission for a week and the US accusing Cuba of doing it intentionally as a means of bullying tactics.

Ultimately, your guess is as good, or better, than mine, as I dont trust/believe anything I read in the news in the US anyways, and most info about Cuba is probably pretty propaganda-ized.

An invasion would be over before lunch.

Working out what to do with the basketcase of a country is the real challenge. It would be easy to exploit the country and its people. What I pray for is a genuine longterm plan geared entirely at the Cuban people.

recent practice runs at invasions have proved less effective than hoped.

i am still trying to work out why anyone would defend bay of pigs, once you see it. more chance of invaders breaking legs on the crumbling concrete protection wall than getting shot.

and why on earth would you think that any politician anywhere is going to come up with a longterm plan for the people? why should cuba be an exception to the rest of the world?

Just get the gov'ts out of the way, let them sell us rum and cigars, maybe they'll buy stuff from us,... economic activity equals prosperity. No need for a plan from a politician.

Amen; the Cuban people deserve better than what they have with Fidel in control....its a beautiful island with an incredible culture and people, and with the right government could be the jewel of the caribbean once again

I have a hunch the Cuban people would not support any invasion. More than you think would fight to the bitter end with kitchen knives and saucepan lids.

They would fight not because they love Castro but because they know they own nothing...have no money...no assets and would end up being the scum of a hasty capitalist system where they would be kicked out of their ramshackled homes onto the street.

Sell them an acceptable plan and you would have co-operation.

1. No foreign ownership of residential property for 40 years. This supported by a title scheme and government funded home ownership plan.

2. Unlimited investment in commercial development by foreigners. Make the centre of the island a special development zone with low corporate tax and high minimum employment standards. Provide meaningful work.

3. All mineral expoloration/development is 50/50 with new government.

4. Make it the Singapore of South America.

After years of communist indoctrination there is no doubt that the Cuban people would be more than hesitant to embrace free market principles. Apparently there is no middle class? No industry? Definitely no legal access to the largest consumer marketplace in the world. Zero tourism dollars from their wealthiest and closest neighbor.

For economic success, it seem imperative that they repair relations with the US.

Leave all the military **** in the garage!!!!! Send them Walmart, McDonalds, and JC Penny and the whole issue will go away. We(USA) have been using our big stick to freely lately. Can't you see how thye whole world loves us now?:-(
