Hello,

I have a question about the Madelaine activation solution.

I've currently placed some in my humidifier...

My understanding was that when the humidity drops that I am to add only distilled water. I was told yesterday by a tobacconist that normally that is the case but for madelaines solution I am to refill with this solution everytime the humidity drops...

Is that correct? If it is just PG and Dist. water then can't I just add water... or in the grad scheme of things it really doesn't make a difference?

thanks!

May I suggest Humidity Beads or as some of the more experienced FOHers on the board use Silica based cat litter?

I use Humidity Beads that are calibrated for 65% RH. They work great. I have no experience with the silica Cat Litter.

I would suggest forgetting about PG solutions and the such. Go with the beads or an active humidification device.

In the grand scheme, you can go either way. Use it every time, you'll use

more, and your tobacconist will be happy.

The "solution" is just a 50/50 mix of distilled water and poly glychol. This blend when placed on foam controls humidity at the 70% range fairly effectively in small humidors. The poly glychol inhibits mold and also evaporates at a lower rate than the water so one does not have to use the "solution" everytime one adds water. It seems that the addition of the "solution" every 6 months and the use of plain distilled water the rest of the time works well. Poly glychol has a tendency to clog the pores of the foam over time so the less you use the longer your foam will last.

On another note you can pick up (or order it) a pint of poly glychol at most drugstores for about $5. This when mixed 50/50 gives you a considerable savings over buying the "special solution" at $7-10 for a few ounces.
