No matter what forum you belong to or frequent, we have all seen the post titled, “How to light a cigar.” I believe that as long as you ensure an even burn from the start, it really doesn’t matter how you light the cigar, JMHO. Now, this post is not about the proper technique for lighting a cigar. My question is, “How does the common cuban light his/her cigar?” Can any of you that have been to Cuba shed any light on this subject?

I am interested in this as well. Esp since El Prez keeps mentioning that the Cubans use their nails to cut the cap of the cigar (The Cuban Technique).

Prez, any input here?

It's my impression that the "common Cuban" can't afford to buy and smoke official Habanos, and that they smoke "peso cigars" or, if they work in a factory, what they are permitted by the factories to smoke.

Regrettably I have not been to Cuba, so I don't know how the natives light whatever they smoke, but I would bet they use cheap paper matches.

Could they be using the muzzle flash off a Soviet AK 47? I really liked the "fire" answer but thought I had to suggest another alternative.

With whatever they find close, normally matches.

If you go to don Alejandro Robaina and ask him, he will poetically elaborate something that will sound like a FED announcement, but it will be the same answer matches or a piece of stick.

What I am really asking, besides whether they use a match, lighter, or AK-47, is do they toast the cigar or do they just go ahead and engulf the cigar in the flame?

I've often thought the best way to light a cigar would be with a reall big car cigarette lighter. Red hot steel. It would be perfectly even too. Someone should do it.

You're fine. I liked the fire comment. Nothing wrong with another wiseass comment. It's one of the things we do around here. :-D

They use a Bic lighter knockoff which has been re-filled and serviced about 100 times.

The two biggest mechanical enterprises in Havana are Bicycle repair shops and lighter repair and re-fill stands.

As for cutting, Cubans in the main use their teeth on those peso cigars. Some (like me) use nails. Cutters are a no no.
