Hello,

I'm new to the forum. I just had a quick question about cigars and temperature.

I bought 2 boxes from cuba (don't worry, from casa del habanos) and a humidor. I've finished stabalizing it, it took forever.

Anyways, the cigars were upstairs and the temp here yesterday was 28 Celcius. I freaked when I came home, they are now in the humidor, in the cold room which ranges from 16-19 Celcius.

I wanted to know, having them exposed for a day at 28 C, what is the risk of hatching the tobacco worm/beetle?

I have a second question.

I have 2 brands in the humidor that are separated by a vercital divider. I also have, outside of the humidor but in humipouches other brands. Would it be wise to stick them in the humidor? or will the "marrying" of the flavours destroy the taste of all cigars?

thanks in advance for all your help! I look forward to discussing the pearls of tobacco smoke with all of you.

Temperature: I believe the temperature needs to be above (70F) for a period of time. I don't believe one day is enough.

Regarding the mixing of brands, I believe El Prez put it best, "The only type of segregation you need to observe is non-cubans -v- Habanos."

I keep my cigars at 62 to 65 degree's they smoke better i think.

to be honest I never care much about temperature, but temperature in my humidors rarely goes over 24-25 °C. You should worry if it goes over that because you create better conditions for beetles and the different types of fungus.

To me there is no thing as marring of flavors between cigars, segregation is not needed, you can perform it to stay organized or whatever but no need to do it for any particular reason.

Welcome Errol.

One day above 21 degrees Celsius combined with 68% RH + is more than enough to trigger a hatching.

If they are there you will see them within a week. Just keep a eye for tobacco dust over the next month. If they have not hatched before then then they are unlikely to do so.

The only reason I have for an A/C ----> my cigars :-D

Rob,

Those conditions are very easily attainable in my region. What preventive measures would you suggest to keep this from happening? It would seem unrealistic to turn down the home thermistat below 21 deg C (69.8 F) or keep my humidor in the refrigerator.

:surprised:

Seriously....do nothing except "be vigillant". If you have 4-5 boxes of cigars, check them weekly with a cursory look. If something happens....then freeze them. Alternatively, shrink wrap your boxes to isolate a breakout....but check them regularly nonetheless.

Less than 1% od Aussie cigar lovers have a climate controlled cabinet. We live in extreme conditions but few have breakouts.

I had one breakout, it was in a box of PSD4s. I went to grab a stick and found one with 3 holes in it. So I froze the sticks along with the box, and smoked the stick with my fingers over the holes ;) It felt like when you would cover the holes on the bong :P

After that I bought a temp controlled unit. (Well kinda) I had a coolerdor before and now I have a winecoolerdoor. So its not specifically a "humidor" but it cost me around 150 total, has cedar trays in it and is a great size.

No problems since :)
