Bolivar Corona Extra (DTA CCUG)

Recommended Posts

Left work early yesterday and decided to go smoke a cigar with one of the local tobacconists. Lit up a corona extra from '99. Here are my thoughts:

Bolivar Corona Extra (DTA CCUG)

Nice looking slightly colorado wrapper. The wrapper had a bit of a course feel, not silky smooth like my '98s. There were a couple of noticable veins and the seams were a little sloppy. The triple-cap, however, was very well applied. The nose was earthy (loam, mulch, peat, etc.) with hints of leather. I clipped it and tested the draw...firm, but nothing to be worried about. The taste on my lips was exactly what I detected in the nose...earth.

I applied the torch, toasting the foot evenly. Brought it to my lips and a couple of puffs was all it took. Nice. The draw opened up and the smoke production was very good. Pretty easy smoking stick. The cigar burned evenly throughout the smoke, never requiring a touch-up. The ash was medium firm and was a dark gray color. It never flaked, but did not require much force to break off. The smoke was cool down to about the last 2 inches when it decided to heat up a little. I nursed it, taking slower puffs and it cooled down. I smoked it down to less than an inch.

The taste was much like the nose and the pre-light taste...pure earth. Fact is, I can qualify this as the earthiest cigar that I have ever tasted. That is not a bad thing (I'm not talking about eating mud, here). I'm talking about flavors that remind me of the smell of mulch and the smell of charred wood (both of which I find pleasant...if you don't, you might not like this cigar). It was medium-to-full bodied and the flavors were rich, thick and chewy. It had just a hint of a coffee and leather undertone. Very good tasting cigar.

These corona extras are very good. They do not have the complexity of the '98s, nor the finesse, but they are a good, straight-forward, earthy Bolivar. I would rate this cigar a B+ (88-89).
