billyburg Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 I've been using a promtheus torch for 3 yrs. now and it crapped out on me this weekend. I've had it repaired once already but I'm without one for 6 weeks. Any suggestions on a reliable/ resonably priced lighter?

IMO, the best thing to light gars wit. They have a huge tank so refilling is maybe to the tune of once every 2-3 weeks if you smoke 1 cigar a day. Always reliable.
Mel Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Blazer Torch is the best I've used. Lifetime guarantee

Loki Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 Billy The flame adjustment screw can be turned past the highest setting on most prometheus lighters. If your style is like this remove the small screw that is in the bottom and pull up on the stop. Be careful if this works you can acheive a very long flame. You acn also try cleaning the jet with a pin and some air in a can. Hope this helps.

One night it works the next it's dead!
josie67 Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 » Blazer Torch is the best I've used. Lifetime guarantee Yup, I couldn't agree more!! I have used a Blazer torch exclusively since 1998, and it has always served me well. Be careful of the the cheap knock-offs though. There are several that look near identical to the original blazer, so make sure it says Blazer Torch.

I gonna start a "William Sonoma Creme Brulee Torch Club" the W.S.C.B.T.C. Ill show youz.:-D
jay8354 Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 As the post before have said, if you smoke mostly at home, get a butane torch. Or the ones which are a add-on to the butance gas can. They are cheap, work excellent. don't look as good as the chef butane torch but at around 1/4 of the price or lower. I own a St Dupont Torch lighter which was very reliable (costs is high though) but the gas tank kept running out. I have now switched to a Z-plus lighter which is very very reliable, big gas tank. I think of this as a smaller more protable version of a butane torch.
sleeper Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 » » I'll 3rd the Blazer. I've been using the same one since 2000. By no means fancy or slender, but very good and reliable with what they do.
El Presidente Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I agree with Mel in that Blazer is the best bang for buck there is. If you have no kids at home...then the Big Bugger Creme B torch is excellent. Just keep in mind it could be lethal in the wrong hands.

I use the $5 crackhead torches from the local stop and rob.:-P .... after I got burned a few times on big $$ Colibri lighters, never again.:-(
Black Plague Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I've never been happy with Colibri or any other expensive torch lighters (though I don't think I've had a Prometheus) Your problem could just be a little dirt, as someone already suggested, which you can clean out. Me personally, I use either matches or my Z-plus torch (which I see Jay already suggested). If you have any old Zippo lighters lying around, just take out the actualy lighter unit from the case and slap in a Z-plus unit in its place. Holds a LOT of butane, is reliable, and, to me, looks snazzier than other torch lighters (I've always loved the look of Zippos).
Taino Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Windmill torch lighter work fine with me, but I usually wear matches:-P
billyburg Posted March 15, 2006 Author Posted March 15, 2006 I think I'm gonna get the Brulee torch, the're on sale for $15 at a local cookware outlet. Also has anyone heard of Visol lighters. I got an E-mail for a triple flame w/ a punch for $32.

n2advnture Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Check out the Solo lighters bro! Inexpensive (under $25) last a long time (I have been using the Trek for about 2 years now) and have a LIFETIME warranty (even 50% against loss or theft!) ~Mark
Duckguy Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 I've heard good things about the Blazzer and Solo. For a simple lighter that's well made I bought a Chinese copy of an S.T. Dupont. You might be suprised how very authentic they are.
jjwright Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 ST Dupont Xtend. Very reliable, no misfires, lightweight and holds up well in the wind. While the cost may be high for some it pays for itself over the years. As long as you use the Dupont fuel you will have no problems.
stogies&hoagies Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 » I've been using a promtheus torch for 3 yrs. now and it crapped out on me » this weekend. I've had it repaired once already but I'm without one for 6 » weeks. Any suggestions on a reliable/ resonably priced lighter? What do you consider reasonably priced? I have had great success with the Xicar lighters, porsche lighters (#5) and the Dupont extend and mini extend. The Xicar would be the cheapest of the lot, the dupont the most expensive.
Mel Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 Let me tell a little story about how much a lighter can mean to a man. After visiting a local cigar bar for a few weeks I made some new freinds. When I would walk in everyone would want to see what was in my traveldoor this week. It got so bad that the owner made a new rule that people were not allowed to bring in thier own boxes with smokes in them. When I asked about the rule he told me that I was exempt but to keep my box low profile. He could not stand to to cut himself off from the box. You see I gave him a Cuban each week and did not have to pay the cover charge. You all get it now, Big Dog at the party. Well one week I decided to invite some of the newbies over to the pool for a herf and show off the growing collection. My ego was in full bloom and these guys thought I was Joe Cool. After helping them all select a fine cigar it was out to the pool deck for the smoke of their lifetime. I had a few of those cheap triple torches from Thompons and then the party came apart.:-( I went through the whole lot and could not get a single cigar lit. No ego anymore, has been replaced by shame. We finally, after much muttering under my breath about the GD lighters, used the rookies bic lighter to get the party off.:-| Screw all cheap lighters. Reliablilty is paramount and cost be damned. I agree expensive lighters(colibri included) are not worth the money and some less expensive may do well but if it don't go every damn time I push the botton it's ****.;-)

mgillett Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 I bought a Siglo lighter and it lasted about 2 weeks. Unfortunately I bought this in Sydney where I visit once every 6 months. Blew about $70 on that POS. :-(
n2advnture Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 » Let me tell a little story about how much a lighter can mean to a man. I agree Mel (although for a slightly different reason) About 2 years ago I went to NYC (04') to what's known now in the group as the X-mas Herf at Club Mac. While there I had the opportunity to meet a great group of guys, most of which I consider great friends now. Since we flew up, I couldn't take a lighter with me so the entire night I was bum'in lighters from everyone. As I made my way around borrowing lighters, I didn't pay much attention to the actual lighters that I was using. People would just hand it to me and I would use it and hand it back. Shaleen (SBP) handed me his lighter and it immediately felt great in my hand. Heavy, good quality, etc...After getting back home, I sent Shaleen an email asking if he knew what model # it was. He returned saying he'd have to check. A week goes by and I ask again. He was busy at the time so I figured it just slipped his mind. Again, he apologizes and said he'll look it up ASAP. ANOTHER week goes by and I send him another email. No response. The next day the EXACT same lighter shows up in the mail - From Shaleen of course. To this day, that lighter means more to me than any expensive lighter I have. It was a Prometheus Titan and runs about $50 - I have used it a dozen times a day for the past couple of years without a problem. If it crapped out, I'd be saddened because of the sentimental value.
