El Dictator, what Aussie reds do you recommend? I am very impressed with the wine industry there in general. I know it's a big country with lots of wines but what are your top 5 C:-D abs & Pinots?

This is Ken's territory although with some of the swill he has made me drink over the years.....you wouldn't know it :-D

Give me a budget to work with ;-)

I'll take a stab at a few questions:

What would you suggest as a nice spring/summer rose for $10 US?

Also, what would you pair with a nice grilled filet mignon or porter house steak for around $25/30 US?

Finally, while we are at it, and it is not along the red wine vein, but how about sparkling wines for under $25 US?

Great thread Chicago. For some reason I never thought of asking our friends down under about one of their great exports.

What would you suggest as a nice spring/summer rose for $10 US? Turkey Flat Rose. (Light but full of flavour. One of our best Rose)

Rosemount "Hill of Gold"

Barwang Cabernet

Both full fruit driven wines with finesse and structure and both should be available. Pricepoint is $20 USD

Anything from 98 or 2002 that is red from the Barrossa, Coonawarra or Clare Valley in South Australia is usually pretty good.

Annie's Lane Coppertrail Shiraz.

Wolf Blass Black Label

Saltram No. 1

Pepperjack Shiraz

You guys and the Kiwis sure do turn out some awesome port wine. :-)

I'd be interested to know your favorite Australian shiraz under $20US. I've had several that I enjoy very much and perhaps Penfolds more than any...but I'm sure there are "marcas" I am unaware of. Oh, Cabs too if you don't mind.

THe Rosemount Hill of Gold is a fine choice...but might i also suggest a couple...

Peter Lehmann’s Clancy’s is a blend of cab, shiraz and perhaps some merlot and cab franc, but it is a damn fine wine!! (~$15)

Also Fire Gully Merlot and cab/merlot are also very good choices (though could be harder to find) (~$20-30)

Drinking '96 Penfolds Bin 407 at the moment. I love it - so bold and powerful yet complex, and (is/was) typically Australian. After Penfolds were bought out by a large conglomerate, there have been rumours that their quality has dropped (maybe 2000?) Orlando St. Hugo is also really good.

In retrospect, you guys should post what Aussie wines are available locally (may take a call or two).

From there, we can give you a definitive list.

I have close to 60 bottles which I consider "in rotation".

´made you drink´!!!!! you mean turned my back and found you´d scoffed half mine!

best thing is to send lists so we can point out some goodies, otherwise might have you chasing all over the states.

Only the second wine I drank one night and ran out for a case the next day.

interesting. 407 is my least favourite penny´s of all, tho i think that the 96 is the best of the line that i can remember. if you like that, try their 389. a bit more exy but a big step up in quality.

We have a few cases of 389 from 96 & 98 I think lying around. I've drunk more 389 than 407, but I think the 407 is a more interesting wine, a really nice balance of blackberries & other fruit, and oak and tannin. I love the 389 as well, but the 407 is my favourite at the moment.

Rosemount Estates Diamond Label Shiraz is far and away my favorite Aussie red. I love Penfolds Chardonnay and a few of their Cabernet's but Rosemount is a winner everytime in my book.
