cigardawg Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Another question for the forum. When a cigar has been discontinued by Habanos SA, how long after the "official" discontinue date are they still made? For example, I have had cigar that were "officially" discontinued at the end of 2002 with box codes into 2003. I can provide specifics if necessary. Also, are some cigars that are "discontinued" just made in such small quantities that they might as well be? Sorry for all the questions, but a few things are perplexing me right now.

cigardawg Posted February 15, 2006 Author Posted February 15, 2006 Sure. Partagas 898 Unvarnished. Supposedly discontinued in 2002. Date code ABR04. Partagas Lonsdale. Supposedly discontined in 2002. Date code JUL03. Just a couple of examples that I have run into. Of course, the lonsdale might or might not have been discontinued...depends on where you read. Everything I've read suggests that the 898U has been discontinued.
billyburg Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 A retailer in Hong Kong informed me the Patagas Lonsdale was only discontinued in cabinets of 50. Still not sure of the actual truth vs opinion.

billyburg Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 If so it's a shame cause I have a cabinet from '01 that is just wonderfull! Like a dummy I split it with my brother in-law and when I got around to reordering they were gone. I gave him one and he begged me to split it w/ him. I snoozed and lost.

Therefore, dress boxes will still be available in small quantities (or at least that is what other sources reveal). The 898 U that I mentioned above...it was an error by the vendor. The code was sent to me via email...it is not an '04 box code, but an '01. Sorry about the waste of time and band-width.:-P
Taino Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Cigars dates and codes are stamped at the moment the boxes live the storage facilities, this usually happens shortly after the cigars have been boxed (say a few months), but I’ve seen boxes in Cuba stored for almost two years waiting to be delivered. Hope this answers your question.
sleeper Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 Another example is the Punch RS 11 that are supposedly d/c'd or on the list, but I have seen codes from '05.

I've never heard of the Punch RS11 being discontinued. It is also on the 2006 production list. Now, the Punch SS2 has been discontinued...that is an absolute shame.:crying:
Cartierusm Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I've wondered this as well. I know the partagas presidentes is discontinued but some of my distributors still have them. Which is normal if they never sold out or the boxes still in Cuba have not been depleted. But the question still remains, let's say presidentes were discontinued, or announced they are discontinued in mid 2005. When will the supply stop. Do they stop making them when the announcement went out and then continue making boxes until the supply runs out or do they stop sometime after?

Thurm15 Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 How about the Bolivar Regentes?I've heard that these were discontinued.
cigardawg Posted February 24, 2006 Author Posted February 24, 2006 » How about the Bolivar Regentes?I've heard that these were discontinued. According to the list that El Prez posted, these will not be made in 2006. A shame, really. The Regentes is a very nice little smoke. Full bodied and earthy...yummmm.
Van55 Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Based on hearsay that I have been provided, the so-called "discontinued list" was never completely official. Some of the sticks that, per Min Ron NEE were to be discontinued within 2002 were not discontinued at all. Some, such as the Por Larranaga PC were apparently discontinued, but then were re-released in March of 2004 in limited quantities and now seem to be in full regular production in cabs of 50. Partagas Corona cabs of 50 were discontinued, but semi-plain boxes of 25 are still being produced. Many people have seen RyJ Pirimide EL's, but these were never offlicially produced. Again, based in hearsay, there are some Havanas for which world wide demand is so great they they will always be produced and sold, regardless of quality -- examples being Monte #2 and Monte #4. Some marcas, on the other hand are simply not produced at all unless the proper tobacco to make the blend is available. Ramon Allones is one example. The short answer to your question is that there is no correct answer to your question as far as I can tell.
