I have never disagreed with Senator more on anything than his opinion of the new Acela trains. They were designed by the French, which is obvious by their Euro-sterility and failure at providing even the most basic comforts. The seat cushions are too hard, the seats themselves too inflexible. And the lack of a recline function is awful--no, the ability of the seat bottom to slide my ass farther from my back does not substitute for a proper recline. NY to DC takes marginally longer on the Northeast Regional, costs materially less, and now might be more comfortable. Amtrak ruined one of my favorite modes of transportation.
