Popular Post El Presidente Posted November 13, 2025 Popular Post Posted November 13, 2025 Every now and then a piece of early Cuban cigar history lands in someone’s hands that feels like it came straight out of a time capsule. Today’s example is this little survivor from the long defunct Fábrica de Cigarros de Adolfo Moeller. Moeller was a Havana cigar and tobacco manufacturer active from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. His operation traded under the name Fábrica de Cigarros y Tabacos Cuba and was located on Belascoaín, one of the great old industrial arteries of Centro Habana. Small houses like Moeller’s made up the backbone of the pre-revolution cigar landscape. Hundreds of marcas were produced in short runs, exported through family agents in New York and Europe, and then disappeared into history as quickly as they arrived. This little petaca is a perfect snapshot of that era. The front shows the classic allegorical image of Cuba, seated beside tobacco bales marked A.M. with a Habana ribbon at her feet. The sides name the factory and the vitola, Elegantes. The striped reverse carries the red Moeller warranty seal and the traditional notice to reject any pack without an intact guarantee stamp. The handwritten signature is a lovely touch. Everything about it speaks to the aesthetics of turn-of-the-century Havana printing and the pride these small makers took in their presentation. Moeller’s business enjoyed a brief export boom before fading from the scene in the early 1900s. What survives today are fragments like this: a label, a band, the odd small pack that somehow avoided being tossed out a century ago. They remind us how many tiny marcas once filled the shelves of Havana’s bodegas and how rich and diverse Cuban cigar history truly is. Photos below. A wonderful glimpse into a forgotten corner of the craft. 6 2
