Popular Post JohnS Posted June 2, 2025 Popular Post Posted June 2, 2025 Ubercigars, here we come? Looking to smoke a cigar but forgot one? Mobile Puro Humidor has you covered Javier Rivera holds up a cigar from one of the humidors he brought to Carey Park Golf Course. Rivera owns and operates Mobile Puro Humidor, a company in Hutchinson that brings cigars to sell at events and businesses. Charles Rankin/The Hutchinson News Charles Rankin - Hutchinson News HUTCHINSON — One of the newest businesses in Hutchinson has taken off and gone up in smoke — but in the best way possible. Mobile Puro Humidor, owned and operated by Javier Rivera and his fiancée Amber Bourell, is a mobile cigar company, where he brings premium "sticks" to events and places that don't have them. Going to places like golf courses, bars and breweries with patios and more, Rivera is finding that what was once just a hobby for him has now become a successful and popular business. Making an expensive hobby accessible to more people Rivera said this journey got started after he decided to quit drinking and needing something else to do with his time. "I'd smoked cigars in the past, so I started getting into them," he said. "When I get into something, I really get into it." He discovered one reality of this hobby soon after — the expense of it. "I was getting all the cool little gadgets, trying different cigars and getting into YouTube, checking out reviews and things like that," Rivera said. YouTube videos introduced him to the concept of a mobile cigar company, and since he already started a pressure washing and parking lot striping business, he thought it could be something he could do. He reached out to some other mobile cigar companies. Navigating the laws and details of the cigar industry One of those contacts helped Rivera discover some of the finer details about starting up such a business "This guy ... from New York was telling me first, you have to check with the state (about laws)," he said. "He helped guide me through that." Rivera was thankful for this advise, as this kind of oversight wasn't something he initially thought of. "Definitely, cigar people are cool. They help each other out," he said. "A lot of them have been helpful, with cigars to have and things like that." Javier Rivera cuts a cigar for a customer in the Mobile Puro Humidor tent at Carey Park Golf Course. Rivera's mobile cigar company brings cigars to sell at events and businesses around Hutchinson and beyond. Charles Rankin/The Hutchinson News Mobile Puro offers a variety of cigars for customers Because of the way this business works, a wide variety of people might decide to buy a cigar from Rivera. He said many people who come to him are first-time or very casual cigar smokers, so he gives advice to them on what they might like or not like. "We want it classy and want it approachable," he said. "We talk to people, lead them in the right direction of what (cigar) to choose." In addition to selling cigars, Rivera also sells some accessories like cutters and lighters, but because he is big on customer service, he'll also cut and light them for people when they buy. "Some people don't want to spend money on something they're only going to use once, so we do that for them," he said. Finally, Mobile Puro has a variety of cigars in a decent range of prices, to make sure that everyone has something they can try. "I have $8, $10 and the most expensive is $26," he said. Even at the cheapest level, Mobile Puro still sells well-known and trusted brands, like Arturo Fuente, Drew Estate, Deadwood, CAO, Oliva and more. A box of Fat Bottom Betty cigars is the best seller for Mobile Puro Humidor. The company out of Hutchinson brings cigars to events and businesses for guests to buy, and will cut and light them for customers. Charles Rankin/The Hutchinson News His most popular cigar right now is the Fat Bottom Betty by Deadwood Tobacco. "They sell out so fast, I don't even put them in the boxes," he said. When he first started, he wasn't planning on selling Deadwoods, because it wasn't something he smoked, but a supplier in Hays reminded him it's what the customer wants, and he knew the popularity of the brand. "I get so many boxes of them now," he said. Mobile Puro traveling around central Kansas for events Now that the word is out about Mobile Puro Humidor, Rivera is getting calls to come to places at least once a week. His biggest events are things like local golf tournaments, beer or whiskey tastings or other places where alcohol is sold, as that is that time when people think about smoking a cigar. A group of competitors in the Men's League at Carey Park Golf Course gather around the Mobile Puro Humidor. The company sells cigars at events and places where smoking might be popular, like golf tournaments, bar patios and more. Charles Rankin/The Hutchinson News "I've been blessed that it's catching on and people are enjoying it," he said. Right now, he said he's willing to bring cigars to almost event that would allow smoking, and would travel if it's worth it for the business. In addition to regular business and events in Hutchinson like golf courses and Sandhills Brewing, he's gone to places like Wichita, Colwich and Belle Plaine. He said he's open to going to Salina if asked. Another regular stop is at the Three Rings Brewery in McPherson, which has a large patio perfect for a drink and a cigar. "Were there sometimes on Thursdays when they do their tastings," he said.
