Caribbean Travel Advisory: US Warns Travelers Of Rising Crime In Cuba

The US Department of State has issued new travel advisories for several Caribbean countries, warning Americans of rising crime and safety risks. Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago are among the latest countries where the advisory levels have been raised in early May.

Travelers are now urged to “exercise increased caution” when visiting Cuba, due to concerns regarding crime and unreliable electricity. The State Department has warned of petty crimes like pickpocketing, purse snatching, and car break-ins, along with violent crime, like armed robbery and homicide. “Violent crime, including armed robbery and homicide, is also on the rise in Cuba,” the advisory states.

Power outages are also a problem. Since October 2024, Cuba has faced frequent blackouts, with Havana experiencing up to 12-hour outages daily, and even longer in other areas. Travelers are advised to stay alert, avoid showing valuables, and “not physically resist any robbery attempt.”

I can only say that 5 years ago, Havana was #1 on my list of safest cities I’d ever been in. We’re not getting a lot of good information over here these days…
