Popular Post Capn_Jackson Posted February 22 Popular Post Posted February 22 Fuente Gran Reserva, Double Chateau Maduro (2015) …too long for the Subject line. About the only way I like a Gran Reserva…old and crusty. Cold draw carries notes of hay, and just a little caramel. Light-up draw is quite complex, with some pepper but an underlay of nuts, also a little lemongrass. First third goes on to show smooth, delightful bready flavors and crushed hazelnuts. Cocoa soon joins in, mild and earthy, for a great harmony. Texture is very creamy. The DNA of Fuente Gran Reserva has all but disappeared, leaving something of a Monte experience, but in an NC way, if that makes sense. Very light body, though. Heading towards the second act, lemongrass comes back from the light-up draw. Nice complexity, smoothness evident of its age, great burn and smoke output. Second third is pretty much cocoa biscuit, with touches of honey/agave here and there, the bittersweet cocoa swirling mixed with the floral sweetness. Around the midpoint, some smoked almonds sprinkle themselves on top. Last act here drops off in sweetness, going down the earthy and leather route. Unfortunately, the end is a tiny bit of dirt and a whole lot of ashtray. Pleasant ride for most of the way, until this bitter ending, going a little over two hours. Scored this one at 78, most of the deductions for the ending. 4 1
