I built it over an afternoon many years ago now but I still use it every time I order cigars from overseas.

Not sure if it's much use to anyone other than Aussies, but for us it's great for -

1) mentally preparing yourself for the bill that Border Force might send you.

2) sanity checking the bill that Border Force has sent you so you know if you need to demand that they actually weigh it rather than use an estimate.

A) Awesome  wow - your taxes suck waaay less than ours. At least the last Castro will be stepping down in a few months, so we have that.

I don't know too much about Canadian taxes, but a quick Google seems it's 88% the value of the box?

Australian tobacco excise is $2,101.89 AUD per kilogram, plus 10% of the value including the tax.

So, on the CoRo in Rob's example, it would be the $612.44 + $61 for the excise, then another $300ish in tax on the box. Total tax about $860 CAD or about 30%. Much better to be Australian than Canadian on that one.

If you're not buying Cohiba though, pretty much anything else we will be worse. Because it's mostly weight, the cheaper the cigar the worse our tax hits you as a percentage. I.e. if you bought in a box 25 of Guantanamera Cristales you would be looking at $520 AUD in the excise alone which would already be probably 300% of the box price.

Gotcha - essentially they're taking out the bottom end of the market where the average Joe operates.  We're 290% last I checked in Alberta based on purchase price. A box at $700 usd is roughly $1,000 cad. The tax would be essentially add triple to that. It's oddly high considering weed is so easily and legally accessible here. Pun intended.

I'm not sure where our nation's priorities lie.

Very handy to have the weights our esteemed govern-mental body has provided us with our own official calculator. But again they seem unable to cope with weighing anything correctly most of the time by all accounts.

We're weights+ value so follow the same patterns.
