El Presidente Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 New tractors for tobacco production in Pinar del Río (+ Video) Evelyn Corbillón Díaz June 6, 2024 5:26 p.m. Photo: Rafael Fernández Rosell Vegueros from Pinar del Río, the largest tobacco-producing province in Cuba, today acquired tractors to promote the tasks associated with the cultivation of the leaf and humanize their work. Three credit and service cooperatives with collective areas where they plant nightshade, a Base Business Unit (UEB) and eight individual producers were the beneficiaries of these 12 tractors as part of the Tabacuba Business Group's strategy. Because the only condition to access resources is to produce tobacco, the organization or ownership relationships do not matter, explained Marino Murillo Jorge, president of the Group. They bought the machinery at the same sales price in foreign currency, since they are only charged a commercial margin in national currency, he explained. He highlighted the willingness of the vegueros to reinvest part of the foreign exchange resulting from the tobacco campaign to benefit the activity, which contributes to the development of the main exportable item of Cuban agriculture. This is the third time that producers in the territory – which provides around 60 percent of the island's tobacco – have access to tractors; while sales will extend to the rest of the country. These agricultural equipment and implements will continue to arrive to mechanize the field and achieve greater profitability taking into account the current cost of the workforce, Murillo Jorge said. The world market continues to demand tobacco, so we have to produce more to contribute to the national economy, he insisted. For Yosvany Pérez Madera, a producer at the Carlos Hidalgo Credit and Services Cooperative, in the municipality of Pinar del Río, it has been a good investment because the work was carried out using animal traction and with the help of the territory's tobacco company. Photo: Rafael Fernández Rosell This is the first time I have bought a tractor, which will allow me to increase production in the coming season from five to 10 hectares. It contributes to the development, modernization and improvement of production, to putting greater effort into cultivation, Pérez Madera told the Cuban News Agency. Eugenio Hernández Serrano, director of the UEB Isabel Rubio, from the municipality of Guane, said that they produce top-notch fine vega and the tractor acquired will facilitate chores in the state area and in the four cooperatives they have. We will be able to plant earlier and not depend on the company's machinery; So we are satisfied with this purchase, he said. 3
