novasurf Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I know this is a cigar board, and I do intend to write about cigar/coffee pairing in the future. For now, I'm curious about your go to coffee......how you brew it and lastly how you prefer to drink it. My current go to coffee is Ethiopian Yrgacheffe. I roast this coffee so that no oils emerge on the surface of the bean. My go to method of brewing is a Bodum french press. I normally drink my coffee with a slash of half and half and one sugar. This coffee has a distinct berry note when it is ground, which is very pronounced in the first half of the cup. This first sips have a lite berry, lite cocoa flavor. As the cup cools, the cocoa flavor becomes more pronounced and the berry intensifies a bit. Always satisfying cup. My go to cigar right now with this coffee is a PLPC. So what is your go to coffee? If you only drink tea, feel free! Novasurf
piranha Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I like "Killer" coffee beans - Kalossi Knockout and use the Presto Scandinavian Design drip coffee maker.
windowrx Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Ethiopian Harrar Grade 5 and Yemen Mokka Sanani are my favorites. I generally roast the Harrar to just before 2nd crack and the Yemen just into 2nd. Lately my favorite cigar to go with coffee has been the Quai d' Orsay Coronas.
n2advnture Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 » I like "Killer" coffee beans - Kalossi Knockout and use the Presto » Scandinavian Design drip coffee maker. Mr Jerry's Killer Beans are awesome! I like the Carribean Cutthroat & Electric Chair Espresso :-P
raney Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Hey Nova - recognize you from some other boards (post as RcktS4 elsewhere) - nice to see you here! I have a few go-tos, as I like me some varietah! Lately, a lot of Kenya AA and Sumatras. I have an order in for some Bolivian organic that a lot of people rave about. I've also been delving into Brazilizan coffees a bit - very little experience with this origin. I usually keep at least half a dozen different origins around for roasting. I drink coffee with just about every cigar I smoke in winter months... I'm a junkie for good java!

I understand there are some other sources around these parts as well that come very highly recommended ;-)
DocRKS Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 My 'go-to' coffee is a lot like my go-to cigar...it sort of changes a few times a week depending on the mood...this morning felt like soemthing with a little zip and fresh pleasant acidy aftertaste - so I went to one oy my Mexican Organics....tomorrow I'm hosting a Super Bowl Party - we are having an early dinner and a very special desert which will be served with some awesome Kona (Capt. Cook's Plantation) that I just roasted on Monday. This very Rich and Full coffee will be paired with the Cohiba Sublime ELs which are really coming into their own now - and that should take us into the game and the eventual Steeler Victory.... Ever since discovering the unbelievable differences between home roasted coffee and the store bought kind (not to mention how much of a cost savings roasting your own green coffee beans delivers) I have come to discover that just like cigars - there are certainly different taste and regional characteristics to coffee beans. I prefer a lighter roast to some mentioned here - once the oils come up and some of that "char" taste is present, I find those regional characteristics tend to be lost - so I keep my roasts short of that mark (which is why I avoid Starbucks or "Charbucks" like the plague) - If home roasting has any interest for you - drop me a line - you can set up and be roasting your own and enjoying coffee like never before for under $100.....
Freefallguy Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Trader Joe’s Winter Blend… adds a nice touch of spice to a cold winter morning here… 4.5 minutes in a French press makes it just right!
jaxstraww Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Killer Beans are great. I also like the Kona from Hawaii. Know a brother that hits me quarterly with some Island beans. He changes the manufacturer up every time.
The Privateer Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I like Indonesian coffees...Sumatra Mandheling or Toraja are best. They need a full, sweet and spicy cigar: Bolivar, Ramon Allones or RyJ round out the flavours perfectly.
raney Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 » » If home roasting has any interest for you - drop me a line - you can set » up and be roasting your own and enjoying coffee like never before for » under $100..... I am already a victim I bought a FR8 last year this time, and replaced it wit an iRoast over the holidays (I like the larger capacity) But for anyone else considering it, you can get a good intro for as litle as $15 with a west bend poppery II from ebay. agree that home roasting completely revolutionized coffee for me. Well worth the tima as far as I'm concerned!

Email sent Ro! I am the only coffee drinker in the house and roasting my own sound great. As far as go to .... Strickly commercial crap on the run most of the time:no: sad huh?
El Presidente Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Jamaican Blue Mountain. I enjoy it as a Mezzo....Single shot in a small Espresso Glass cup with a dash of warm milk. Partagas Serie De Connoisseur No 3 :-)
Maverick Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 Surely the only Coffee you need is the Nescafe Blend 43, is their no better Coffee. I do enjoy the fruits of Dean Merlo's labour, that would be my favourite stable. As for a particular favourite I couldn't say. Ross...
Wiley Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 I've tried a lot of boutique coffee, but so far there's nothing I like more than Illy Espresso.
Andyman Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 Kenya Gran Cru brewed strong in a french press..
Taino Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 I admit to drink a lot of coffee with cigars, but mainly because it’s a matter of necessity (I can’t drink whisky all the time) or to have something that makes company to my cigar, but to me coffee is not a very good companion to cigars. I drink mainly mixtures of Arabica (shade grown), I have many different coffees from Ethiopia to Venezuela and take it expresso
Girardian Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 My home roast. I find a great "go to" green bean is Bolivian Organic. My "go to" espresso is Malabar Gold.
setay Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Bolivian Organic followed by Costa Rica La Minita Tarrazu
SuperT Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Norman, I think I'd pick Bolivian Organic or Mexican Chiapas, both of those NEVER fail. With them, I'd say MC4 or PLPC make me smile! If it's not one of those in a drip machine (I know, I know - gotta get the press out), I like to pull blends through my espresso machine:

I love the Carribean Cutthroat, Venezuelan Vendetta, and Mexican Mayhem. Hell, I have not had one bad cup of coffee since switching to Killer Beans.:-)

lfg2nrg Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I always find myself going back to Bolivian organic.
