Ken Gargett Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 some of you may have seen the 'pilot guide' series on tv. i am not very familiar with it but they had one on cuba so taped it and finally watched it. basically some personality-free pom wanders around showing 'true insights' and 'behind-the-scenes' stuff on how a country really is. well i can't wait to get back to cuba because according to this drivel, all cubans speak fluent english, tho in american accents. they all have cool jobs like photographer or musician. currently, no other music is heard in cuba than hip-hop. one quote was that the 'socilaist party really is just one giant party'. all cubans move from party to party, at which there will always be a hip-hop band. all cubans live in spacious houses (granted they are a bit old) but beautifully furnished. kitchens are large and airy and fridges are full of fresh fruit and veg and meat and seafood fall from the rooves. country living was described as 'elegant' with families attending ball room dancing and going to rodeos on weekends, in large old cars. etc etc . what a crock of crap! where do idiots get off portraying this stuff? are they really that stupid? presenter toby too-dumb might be, but how could producers put this swill together? can't say i'll bother with any others in the series if that is their level of credibility.
novasurf Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Haven't seen it Ken, but based on your post, it's clear they missed by half a mile.
ALB Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Haven't seen this Ken, but clearly there must be an audience for this type of portrayal of a country to warrant a show being presented like this. Sounds like they missed the essence of what actually makes Cuba such an amazing place to visit (ie the PEOPLE, music, old buildings, salsa etc). I know that when I was in Havana, all I could do was look at the old buildings & imagine what it would ahve looked like in its pomp in the gangster days. In fact those old buildings were to my way of thinking a good representation of Cuba, where what was once great is now faded, & what will replace it? I guess when El Jefe moves on time will tell. Gald I went there before the changes, & hopefully get there again sometime after things have changed.
Ken Gargett Posted February 4, 2006 Author Posted February 4, 2006 agree re the buildings. amazing. just to sit and look at their crumbling husks and wonder what was and what might be.
El Presidente Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Ken Sounds very much like 2nd rate Journalist of questionable ethics on a fully paid trip by the sponsor who has a vested interest. Disgraceful. By the way, when is your story on Potuguese Corks coming out?
Ken Gargett Posted February 4, 2006 Author Posted February 4, 2006 » » By the way, when is your story on Potuguese Corks coming out? last tuesday - great to see you keeping up! and i think you might find it 'balanced'. i doubt i'll be 'cork person of the year'.
