Popular Post ManInBlack Posted August 29, 2023 Popular Post Posted August 29, 2023 This is the first box of RASS I’ve purchased, a 50 cab, and they were purchased from our host in 2018 I believe. From reading reviews this strikes me as a divisive cigar with some singing their praises and others shrugging their shoulders. I’ve read that RASS are good to go after a year or two but I’ve been testing these every 6 months or so and have found previous cigars youthful and tannic, with only brief glimpses of deliciousness. This box is dark and oily, so I suspect that’s the reason these are taking so long to become great (or at least that’s what I’ve been telling myself). Let’s see where it’s at. Wrapper: Colorado Rosado, oily, tight seems, bumpy, rustic. Cold draw: Molasses, malts, red peppers. Draw has slight resistance. 1st 3rd: Raisin, molasses, nuttiness. Ash is white and hangs on tight. Generous smoke output. Medium body, medium strength. Burn was wavy but self correcting. 2nd 3rd: Flavors ratchet up. Smoke is now creamy. Molasses, coffee, fig, baking spice. Ash holds until half way through cigar and drops onto the floor with a thud. So far this is the best RASS I’ve had by a mile. Reminds me at times of an old Armagnac. Medium full flavor, medium body. Final 3rd: Slight bitterness appears so I try my best to sip. Strength is building. Flavors of 2nd 3rd are all present but now more concentrated. Earthiness joins the party. Chili spice is present in the retro. Medium full flavor and medium full strength. I had to adjust the burn twice but no major issues. Nubbed. Overall: This is finally hitting where I hoped it would after 5 years of aging. I was surprised by the strength but not mad about it. I didn’t get as much fruit as I had hoped, unlike the many RASCC I’ve had. This feels like the brooding older brother blend. I’m going to start dipping into the box with more frequency now but I feel like these still have plenty to gain from age which is wild to me. Details: Cigars were aged at 65% in my coolidor. I paired the cigar with a rum old fashioned with a blend of Hamilton Demerara and Jamaican rum. I think the pairing helped supply some funky fruit elements to the experience. 8
Ford2112 Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Nice review. I have certainly connected more with RASCC then these. 1
