This ad is likely from the early 20th century, because aside from it's overall appearance it mentions "Clear Havanas." I believe clear Havanas referred to cigars rolled in the US (mostly in Florida and New York) using Havana tobacco imported in bales. My understanding is that in the pre-Depression era these were by far the most common variety of Cuban cigar. I'm not sure whether they continued being made up until the Embargo. By then cigar sales overall were much smaller; the Depression obviously put a serious dent in the market, and with the meteoric rise of the cigarette beginning after WWI they never really recovered.

I just can't get over how much the pre-mold "Shivers' Panetela" looks like a big turd.
