Ken Gargett Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 The Corona Gorda Crush (still struggling with that name) – Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 1 (JUS OCT17) – Pol Roger 2012. For the last two cigars in the Corona Gorda reviews, I matched both with Pol Roger champagnes. I was doing a review of the 2012s, brilliant stuff, and so did not want to waste the bottles. Isolation had prevented the usual vultures descending to scoff my good stuff! So I made the sacrifice to slog through the bottles myself. As I write this, I'm forced to wade through some fabulous 2016 Barolos for the same reason (but the is cigar long finished). The Epi 1, as the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 1 seems to be universally dubbed, is a 46 ring gauge (cue a crescendo of applause) and 143 mm in length, coming in slide lid boxes of 25. My example was of superior construction, firm and yet with a good draw. Opening with some nice toasty notes, quite rich. A touch woody. Some coffee grinds. For me, this is all along the Hoyo DNA. Quite powerful throughout. Good strength. Richness prevailed throughout and then... continue to full article. 4
Bill Hayes Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Great read Ken. Pol Roger is my other half's favourite. Quite a few get demolished at our house (not by me) but not great aged vintages like mentioned in your article. Cheers.

Cheers. thanks Bill. she obviously has great taste, at least in fizz! the 12s are current, you won't get younger from Pol at the moment. i didn't mention it in the piece but i've had a few stunning old Pols. 1908, but it was eclipsed by the 1914. a couple from the 40s. also had an amazing 1920s Burgundy one night when christian very kindly invited myself and another bloke to dinner at his place in Champagne - what a thrill that was. it came from a box in his cellar, laid down by his father and not touched until Christian opened it a few months earlier. astonishing wine. i also remember it because i was talking to Halliday a few months later and he was in a real tizz as he had lost a notebook. was not worried about any note in it, except that it had an old burgundy from when he had dinner with Christian a few months earlier (James had no idea i'd been the week after him). so i said that would surely be the 1920s... XYXZ (i have the details elsewhere). yes, yells James in delight. that is it! then he thinks about that. how the hell did you know that? he won't believe ESP so eventually i tell him i was there the week after him and Christian served me the same wine. he is delighted for a few moments. then he starts to think some more. looks at me. are you telling me that Christian opened the same wine for you as me? seems so, James. never seen James look so utterly disgusted. 1

Geez that Burgundy would of been something very special. And yes, the missus has good taste, albeit expensive ones by the state of our credit cards at the moment. ?
