BoliDan Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 Forgive my review style. I just write notes and random thoughts as they come and I dont go back to edit. So, if it reads like a stream of consciousness, I apologize. I almost grabbed a CoRo, but I said on earlier thread that this was my perfect xmas cigar, so might as well eat my words. Truth is, I hate this vitola. It just has to do with tge time commitment. Unfortunately so many great cigars come in this size, i can't avoid them. Cold draw cocoa, light woods, some leather. Construction is very impressive. Nice draw. 1st third: minimal flavors for first 20 minutes. I find very often RyJ start weak but open up to be flavor bomb after some impatient frustration... It's so annoying but it's also very worth it, if RyJ is one of your top marcas. Annnd right around 3/4 of an inch, I start getting some fruity sweetness and creamy cedar. Nothing much else. Towards the end of the third im getting herbal tea, which is disappointing to me. Smoking at Mild-Medium, and has a good burn. 2nd third. Not what I expected. This was a box split and ive had 4 from this already, all excellent. However, this one seems to be going no where. Very light. Retrohale is also absent on flavor. Fruity sweetness and cedar is still there. Im failing to pick up any leather, spices or cocoa which is usually prevelant by the half way point. NOTE: I just tested a theory. I took overwhelming puffs in three breathes, and retrohaled. I got what i expected at this point with a small puff. Fruit, cocoa, wood a hint of leather. This obviously got thin or not enough top leaf. Im sad but will continue for review sake. Final third: OK WTF, this thing just kicked in to gear. Absolutely luscious. Great cedar and cocoa and hitting me with a thick layer raspberry jam. Still at medium, but nice and chewy smoke. Oh yeah, this is the RyJ i expected by the second third. And the leather also comes in. Fan.tas.tic. However, I still feel cheated by the first 2\3 s. Final Thoughts: pissed off and happy. I kind of wish I went with my instict and smoked the CoRo. Anyway, 1/3 of a great cigar is not wnough to save this this cigar. Too much disappointment to reach this zen. Score: 75/100 Smoke time: forfot to set timer; long ass time. 0-50: Couldn't Finish scale of distgutinginess. 51-60: Poor 61-70: Average 71-80: Good 80-90: Great 91-95: Excellent, go deep 96-100: Religious Expierence 3
Derboesekoenig Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 That's a solid perspective and review on recent/fresh RyJ Churchills. That last third you describe is what I get out of them at 3-5 yrs of age. Get a box and put away for that long and I think you'll smoke them more often. They can be amazing 1
