i bet they wouldn't bitch for a decade if someone used it.

You reckon?

It is unlikely a heathen such as yourself would get within  cooee of a RR function. They have little to worry about

well, little you know!

my uncle was one of the leading whatever-you-want-to-call-them in various RR societies. my earliest memories go back to riding in the flip-up seat at the back of one of his rollers (he was huge into vintage cars etc), something you would never be allowed to do today with health and safety.

that particular car he spotted whilst on a car rally with my old man many years before i was born when they were travelling through the banana plantations of northern nsw. uncle spotted something sticking out of the dirt. went in, spoke to the farmer, and bought his first roller for five pounds, as long as he dug it out of the dirt and delivered it back to brizzy.

did so, and then he completely restored it. he passed away last year but it still goes. over the years, he has had many RR, most but not all vintage. even has patented certain tools for working with RRs, i believe. all that said, despite dad and my uncle being close, he was a car nut, as is his son. our side of the family consider it akin to magic that the things even start every day.

anyway, when younger, i did get to those very events.

needless to say, no one has ever let me drive one.

trust me, the chasm between him and dad/me as to an understanding of or interest in cars was not lost on him.

he had the 2nd range rover which ever landed in australia. many years ago. i was a small kid but we used to go on driving holidays and a few days before one, some idiot drove into the back of our car (i remember it as though it happened yesterday. a tosser solicitor, who got out and started bellowing legalese at the old man and explaining why dad was at fault and bignoting himself and detailing the hell we faced in court. the old man, who had a fair old temper - some things do not run in the family - said nothing but handed over his card. at the time, he was the senior partner of one of the state's biggest firms and about to be president of the law society. the look on this bloke's face! air went out of him faster than the hindenberg explosion. he stood off to one side, head bowed, utterly silent, like a naughty schoolchild as dad explained in great depth and volume the error of his ways and how unfortunate it was that his parents had met and how the gentleman was welcome to his selection of judges if he really wanted to go to court but that probably would not be considered a career-enhancing move...).

anyway, my uncle lent us his new range rover. we were camping and everywhere we'd stop, people would gather in crowds around this car, begging the old man to lift the hood so they could look under it. which he rarely did as he would then have been immediately exposed as clueless should anyone ask the most basic question.

so we were kings of the campground for about 30 minutes. until it was time to bring out our tents. not so well planned. we had a small cub scouts' tent which two could squeeze in. and a child's teepee. so parents had one, sisters had the other and i got the back seat.

and our status went from campground gods to embarrassing rank amateurs.
