After the terrible crash in May Cubana stopped leasing aircraft (a high level general may have also been embezzling from the company as well) and were only flying a few flights a week from Havana to Santiago de Cuba and Holguin. 

No word in the article regarding what aircraft/crews will be used, but it appears they are adding 6 more frequencies per week to 3 more destinations.

I flew a now defunct offshoot of Aeroflot airlines from Moscow to Siberia (Amur) . That was the most terrifying 10 hour flight ever.  The only way I got through it was keeping focus on the super hot, out of this world flight attendants.  6 inch heels and 4 inch skirts.

The photo that The Havana Times used was of Cubana's One and Only ATR 72-500. Not an inherently dangerous aircraft, but a full technological generation behind the fleet of Antonov AN-158s that they cant keep in the air and should be using on these routes. They were "Formally" grounded mid may, but all 6 were sitting on the tarmac at Jose Marti, engines covered, when I was there in April.

I have flown with them twice. Never again. I flew Havana-Holguin then Santiago de Cuba-Havana last November. They were using the same, leased, Ukrainian A320 to fly 2 daily Havana-Holguin roundtrips and 3 daily Santiago de Cuba-Havana Round Trips. They new every flight except for the first a second was going to be delayed by hours, but never made any announcements. 

My 9 am Havana-Holguin Flight left at 1:30pm a few days later my 6:15pm return flight from Santiago de Cuba left at 11:45 pm, landing us back in Havana at about 1:30 am. 10 hours of delays for less than 3 hours total flight time is just not acceptable. They were probably running the few (old) aircraft they had leased about 20 hours a day. Utilization that would give any major airlines fleet planner a serious half chub and their mechanics a heart attack. Most Major Airlines fly their much newer aircraft about half that much, and still seem to turn a profit.

I flew Gaviota once from Havana to Cayo Largo. It wasn't a jet, it was a double propeller. Nothing to complain.

About the crash I was reading earlier that the from the 3 survivors just one is still alive. A 19 years old girl. Left leg amputated below the knee but still alive in the hospital.
