What good oil do you have?

What's your best local advice, insider info, hidden gem, hot tip?...

Wait, this thread sounds a bit weird at the outset, doesn't it? Good oil? I should perhaps explain that. No, maybe much to your chagrin, this is not a fetishistic sex thread or some thinly veiled way to entice you to join my stark naked Swedish massage group. Nor is it a motor vehicle maintenance thread... I'm not sure how international the term is, but the "good oil" in Aussie & NZ simply means reliable info. Sorry to take the wind out of your sails there. 

Anyhow, the point of this thread is to do with local info. All the great insider knowledge we carry around with us day-to-day that may be of benefit to someone else when we least expect it. Bars, restaurants, pubs, cafes, music venues, cigar lounges, breweries, specialty retailers, whatever... Could be that someone in your area will pick up a great tip from you, or someone about to travel to your country or city will do the same... that sort of thing. 

The Junk Bar

My favourite for Brisbane is a dingy little eclectic joint called The Junk Bar in Ashgrove. You would never find this place via a tourist guide or simply stumble upon it. I'm sure there are loads of Brisbanites who still don't know of it. Ashgrove is hardly the hotspot for anything, really. And this place is somehow hidden in the main shopping complex on the corner of a busy road, next to a fish & chip shop. When you walk in, it's like you've gone back in time to the lounge room of some 70s' daffodil with a disturbing penchant for taxidermy. But give it a moment and the mood and setting really takes hold. It's not a smoker's bar, but the wines, beers, and cocktails are top shelf and there's a little Thai place next door that you can order food in from. Classic old vinyl holds sway for the soundtrack, most of the time, and they also have a side room, which is like entering a bonafide wood cabin, where they host live music. It's a strange experience, but it's a cracker of a bar! I highly recommend checking it out if you're ever in town.
