Popular Post Grateful13
This Monte 4 is from the aged sampler from early March. I am relatively new to Cuban cigars and this is the first stick I've smoked that is more than 2-3 years or so old. I have smoked more Monte 4's than any other Cuban so far, so I thought it would be best to make the Monte 4 the first one I tried from the aged sampler since I am most familiar with that vitola and profile. Setting: Saturday night 8:30PM, 81 degrees and I am drinking ice cold green tea. Initial impressions: I'm initially struck by the wrapper color compared to what's left of my 2015 box. The wrapper has a noticeable red hue that is absent from any of the newer sticks. It is a bit firm on the cold draw with a light barnyard flavor. Nice looking dimple at the end too. First third: Strong cocoa flavor to start that gradually fades and gets creamier and lighter as the first third processes. Draw is a bit tight but not too bad and burn is excellent. By the end of the first third, cream is the dominant flavor with a only a small touch of cocoa remaining. Starts medium, becomes more mild-medium by end of first third. Second third: Coffee becomes more prominent as the cream flavor fades. Cocoa gradually returns as the smoke gets stronger. By the half way point it's a nice mix of the classic coffee/cocoa and is a touch fuller than medium. Draw is a little tight but not bad - construction and burn have been perfect and the ash still hasn't fallen. Final third: Not much has changed from the half way point other than the intensity picking up slightly. Still the same coffee/cocoa. The ash finally falls a little bit into the final third. I eventually nub it out after 65 minutes. Overall: A fantastic smoke. Compared to the fresher smokes, it's easy to see how this cigar benefits from aging as there was no harshness to the smoke even at the end. The flavors were more well defined and smoother I would say, even if not particularly complex. I'd rate it a 90-91 out of 100.
