Visually it looks off-putting but in terms of protection and long term aging it is generally held to be beneficial. Old Cubans with it on seem to hold a lot more flavour and richness then those without (In my experience). I think Cuba just decided that it was an easy cost cutting measure and it improved the visual appearance of its brand.
vivalanation734 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Nine times out of ten, they are wrapped to protect them in transit. It also makes it easier for shops to put barcodes or price stickers on each stick for singles.
