i see the celtics have first pick in the draw. a lottery? i thought they made the playoffs this year? how does that work?

any info appreciated.

The Celtics traded Pierce, Garnett and two other guys to the Nets in 2013. They got players, the 2014, 2016 and 2018 first round pick and also the right to swap first rounders in 2017.

It's also based on a variety of percentages, and for Boston the following were applicable regarding the chances of each pick:

1st: 25 percent

2nd: 21.5 percent

3rd: 17.8 percent

4th: 35.7 percent

They'll be one of the best teams in the league again next year, and will get Brooklyn's pick again, which will probably be in the top 3 again.  They really fleeced the Nets in that trade, which has to go down as one of the worst in the history of American professional sport.
