Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure #1: Unknown box code: HdM Review Comp 2016

Recommended Posts

This is my first Hoyo Ep #1. It was part of a sampler package that I selected. It is also a Tubo version. Unfortunately I don't know the date or box code.

Construction: Nice light wrapper. Somewhat bumpy but I don't care about that. Firm roll with no soft spots and a great looking foot. The cap is nicely done but has some lifting along the edges.

Pre-light: After the cut the pre-light draw is very nice. Somewhat snug but workable. A light grass taste, sweetness and a spice...like a baking spice. Maybe nutmeg?

First third: The burn is inconsistent but then self corrects becoming a nice straight burn. The flavor is light to medium with flavors of light tobacco and hay. Also a white pepper on the retrohale.

Second third: Burn is still consistent. There is a good amount of smoke, the draw is still snug. The flavor has returned to the baking flavors...and even...is that sourdough? I've often read of it but never tasted it...so I think that's what it is. Very nice.

Final third: I need to learn to slow down on smoking. Its getting a but hot. The flavor is great and if I squeeze a little I am rewarded with a lot more smoke. Some of the white pepper flavor has returned.

Overall: Definitely a great smoke. I would love to have more of these and rest them for a while, I think this stick would have been better with more resting. I would give it an 8/10.

Thanks for the review!!  Beautiful wrapper on that guy and nice ash!!  In my experiences latter portions of cigars can be a tad more powerful and as you mentioned require a little more patience. Try placing your thumb and pointer/middle finger under the cherry as if you'd pinch the cigar right under the ash along the wrapper.  I can usually gauge how hot a given cigar is progressing from the heat emanating through the wrapper.
