"Unread" button

What's the meaning of having this new green "unread" button? So far, when clicking on the red dots or stars in lead of each each topic entry line, you were automatically directed to the first unread post. So, for what's this new green button good for? Appears rather redundant, isn't it?

Ok, understood, but the old functionality hasn't changed between old and new forum, has it?

Personally, I find all the green boxes now rather distracting and not much serving the clarity of the page's look. But can live with that if it serves others, of course.
