MIKA27
The First Trailer for The Birth of a Nation Is Haunting and Intense The Birth of Nation premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January and immediately earned some incredible buzz. Not only did it win the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, it also set the record for the biggest sale in Sundance history—Fox Searchlight picked up the distribution rights for a whopping $17.5 million. Now, those of us who didn't get to see the film at the festival get to see why: written, produced, and directed by Nate Parker, who also stars in the film, The Birth of a Nation follows Nat Turner's 1831 slave revolt in Southampton, Virginia. The first glimpse of the film, underscored by Nina Simone's haunting cover of "Strange Fruit," proves it'll be unflinchingly brutal and stunningly directed—and, no doubt, a major contender for next year's Oscars race. The Birth of a Nation hits theatres October 7. MIKA: I love and hate these kind of movies. Love them because of the way they are filmed with some amazing unknown actors but hate them because it was an incredibly horrible time in history. So much suffering and inhumanity toward people.
