Buch0 Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Hey guys, I recently got a Zico Humidifier Tube as a gift, has anyone here had experience with one? I myself haven't but I'm wondering how robust they are? I put a robusto in there and it's sitting at around 80-90%.. Not a bad idea for travelling purposes if you only want the 1 cigar for an amount of time, and if it works.. Let me know if you've come across/use one?
santela Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Just use the disposable aluminum tubos that come with cigars, light and disposable, much more practical. 2
MIKA27 Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Is there obviously some sort of solution, glycol or beads, maybe gel? Looks good though, but I've also used old tubos before and they were good for travelling about. I wouldn't say no though if it were a gift and again, pretty cool.
Rye Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Neat looking piece of gear! I would calibrate the hygro first off, then try and dry it out a bit so it reads my preferred (60-65) RH. Is the body glass?

These are what the inside of each end cap looks like, you'd guess there is some sort of solution in each... I might stick some beads in there to dry it out and see how we go. Yeah it's tempered glass supposedly.
Guest scsi Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Well, it is essentially a carry about For just one stick from what I can see...... I got a pelican case for X-mas that holds 3 I'm thinking it's only purpose is to keep the CC healthy while you are traveling I wouldn't worry about the display... just keep the material moist till you get there
PapaDisco Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 That thing's really cool! Get the rH calibrated (either the beads are too wet or the hygrometer is off) and that looks like an awesome way to get a favorite stogie to the club. Like others have indicated, I'd aim for dryer rather than wetter, particularly if the stick is going to be in there for several days. rH moves around with temperature and temperature variations are sure to happen with a mobile device like that. 1
PigFish Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Looks cool, yet appears also be a fast way to kill a (the only) cigar you take to smoke by drenching it with water. Yet, if one took a cigar from a warm environment, allowed it to acclimatize and then cooled it, it would read a much higher rH than the acclimatized cigar actually still is.... REMEMBER, rH is dependent on temperature. Lets keep with it looking cool... Dry the damn thing out, rH devices in confined spaces that will endure rapid temperature changes is just a bad idea. So is the dependence of a hygrometer mounted in a minute device that can be taken from one temperature environment to another. Dispose of the "elements" or dry them out as I stated earlier, ignore the hygrometer and enjoy it for what it is... Never transport your acclimatized cigars with a humidifying element. Seal them tight and allow them to regulate themselves. Cheers. -Piggy 3
Fugu Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Really nice looking technical gadget – and I guess the person gifting it to you must be a very nice, perhaps a loving one. But I would say the humidification not just renders rather useless, it may even be detrimental to your cigars if not carefully used. May lead to an overhumidified end (or both ends if theres is a second unit), and a drier body. This is just a play on risking a cigar, at least compromising the smoking performance. I have to support Santela's suggestion: Simply put your well humidified cigar in a standard Habanos one-way tube (you may even seal the rim with tape if you like) and you are fine for weeks, given the ambient temperature is not too unstable. Since there will be only a small airvolume this is a minor problem. And even the small humidific. device in your gadget tube wouldn’t be able to cope with large fluctuations in temperature. You may well use it, but I would strongly advise on not charging the humidifier, quite as people don’t use the humidifiers that come with jars and books etc. And also a cautionary note on the small hygrometer. If this is a mechanical one, as it looks, it will be based on the hair-filament technique. As nice and neat as it apperas, no way to get this one working precise and reproducible, since the dimensions, and as such the measurement segment will just be too small. Due to the necessary transmission ratio non-humidity related variations will be resulting in comparatively large errors. And in such a portable device it will be prone to mechanical shock. This is my guess without knowing that device, so perhaps other users of this device, or other people in the know like PigFish can say more. Edit: ...like PigFish can say more - 2
