... but how did we get to Florence (Firenze) and Leghorn (Livorno)?

I reckon this is meant rhetorical, aye - but ... blame the old Romans - Florence had been founded as Colonia 'Florentia' (Roman goddess of flowers and plants). In modern-day Italian, flower (blossom) is fiore, thus Fi(o)renze wile the English speaking world kept closer to the Roman rooting. So, you are even closer to the 'original'.

Ask why Germans call Cologne "Köln" and the locals even "Kölle"...

Simon Bolivar was a real person - and one helluva guy at that. I feel personally compelled to pronounce his name the way it's meant to be.

So, Partagás and Upmann were no real persons?

Hispanophones, and speakers of other languages, pronouncing names of historical persons in their own way? How confusing! Jesus! :P
