Quint Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 i post months ago about how I just getting back into purchasing boxes of cigars again. I've been smoking Cubans since the mid 90's, before it became so popular in the US, and I purchased boxes over the years and had a pretty decent stock of cigars with some age etc. Then in the mid to late 2000's the industry I'm in was starting to have problems (high tech semi-conductor). I'd been working for 13 years for this company from the start up. We made cutting edge equipment but they were 8 million dollars a piece. So of course company's (customers) such as Intel, IBM, Samsung cut back on capital equipment expenditures. Obviously the writing was on the wall. If it was going to be a short lived down period we could ride thru it, but any real extended down trend we were in trouble. Well recovery was slow, very slow. So in preparing for what could be a long period of time unemployed (because the region I live in employees 1000's in the industry and we would all be out looking for the same few jobs) I had to cut back on the luxuries in life, bye bye to my cigar purchasing days. So I ended up burning thru all my stock, every last box. I remember the sad day that I smoked my last Cuban looking into two huge empty coolidors. Sorry to be so long winded, now fast forward to today. I've been on a buying frenzy these past 6 months and I was looking at another post about a particular cigar and realized I forgot I have those buried somewhere lol. I've now got enough stock to actually forget about again. Yahoo! I always use to love going thru a rotation in the humi's and making discoveries long forgotten.
polarbear Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 It's hard to believe now, but there was a period in my life where my single 75 count desktop humidor sat empty for almost a year. I made a huge (at the time) purchase of a box of Monte 5s and they didn't last as long as I hoped they would. I didn't find myself in a position to be able to afford even a single stick from the local smokart for almost a year. I had no cigar friends to mooch off and always smoked alone anyway. I started earning decent money again and slowly started buying again, a 5'er here, a sampler there eventually moving into box purchases and then to multi box purchases. I look at my 3 wine fridges that are now bursting at the seams and wonder how I went from a kid digging through couch cushions so he could afford a Monte #4 to a man with a collection now numbering in the thousands. Sorry to also be long winded but the title of this thread reminded me of earlier in the week when digging through one oft desktops I found a collection of Monte #2s I forgot I had and chuckled to myself thinking if I were to go back and tell my 20 year old self with the empty humidor that one day I'd be in a position to forget about whole boxes of cigars, he would probably laugh at me
Duxnutz Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 Good stuff. We've been down to one income in my household (and quite a few unforecast expenses) for the last 6 months and cigar expenditure has been severely cut down. I enjoy having a largish collection but sometimes think you enjoy them more when they're harder to replace. 1
muzz Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 I've always just had the 30 count desk top with maybe a dozen cigars which I would smoke from time to time, usually on a special occasion. I was hopelessly addicted to ciggies for 15 years so the occasional cigar was all that I wanted and I was travelling a fair bit for work and had my favorite duty free shops where I would buy only enough to smoke over a few weeks. Now I have been doing too much reading on the effect age has on the cigars (mainly thanks to this site) and have stopped buying singles. I buy fivers so I can smoke them over time and see how they develop. I have bought several boxes over the last few years when I find something that really appeals and so the collection grows. I’m currently looking to purchase either a large humi or small wineador. I have singles that I have forgotten about but am looking forward to the time when I have boxes that I have forgotten about. I might be slower getting there but I have no doubt that is where I’m headed.
avaldes Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 Hah, I can relate to this thread. I too had a major change in life and smoked thru my stash in a little over 3 years. I still have a few boxes that survived the purge, but not many. I am now in the process to starting back. In another 6 months my expendable income goes up significantly and I am planning to start stocking up again.
