Popular Post hounser Posted April 11, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2015 Intro: The Trinidad Coloniales are one of my favourite sticks. Normally I try one stick out of all my '14 boxes just for curiosity sake and since the competition was mentioned I thought this was perfect timing. I have both a '10 and '12 box of Coloniales currently in my humi, the 10s are almost gone and it's a shame to see them go but it was a great box. I smoked a '12 about 6 months ago and they are getting really good. In fact the '12 is looking to hit my sweet spot for these faster then the '10 box did. I was interested to see if the '14 box is hitting stride even faster.Prelight:Construction of the stick looks good with a nice oily sheen and a firm pack. Finished off with the standard pigtail. Predraw is mostly a grassy note, I can sense some sweetness but it's pretty faint.1st Third:The draw is absolutely perfect, a little firmness but not too much, which I like in a vitola this size. Burn is very good, I am very impressed with the overall construction right off the bat. Getting some light grassy notes on the initial draws which give way to a deeper woodiness. It starts to settle into a creamy flavour, almost a little vanilla with the grassiness starting to disappear and a nutty note becoming evident.2nd Third:Grassiness has gone all together now, we are hitting stride with some great nutty flavours and continuing with that vanilla note in the background. Body is a solid medium now and smoke production is very good. Construction continues to impress. It shows just a little youth on the retrohale, which is not bad considering only a years age, the '12s are only slightly better right now and the '10s took almost the full 5 years to become ultimately smooth. A good sign for these sticks.Final Third:Nutty flavour has taken over as the main note and the vanilla has shifted to a darker more caramel note with a little bit of woodiness, almost like a burnt caramel note, if that's a thing. Maybe this is similar to when people talk about Creme Brule flavour, which I am not really familiar with. Construction has held on very well with just the last few draws heating up.Final Thoughts:I was very pleased with this stick overall. I really do feel like this box of '14s may hit stride faster then the '12s I have. To be honest, I attribute this mostly to our host's selection (these were a HQ box) then necessarily Trinidad as a whole as a lot of examples I saw in Cuba this year were not very impressive. That being said it still feels like it needs another year to be closer to full potential as I'm sure no one who smokes Trinidad will be surprised by I'm sure. 6
kuma Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Great review. Bought a box of 24 PSP Coloniales from host. They are 2014 smokes but they are really very mild for a young cigar. Along with the Picadores that I also bought I can not keep my hands off them.
JohnS Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Thanks for the great review! Can you expound why the Trinidad Coloniales is one of your favourite sticks? The answer could be, 'just because' but I am curious as I've not sampled a Trinidad cigar before (although I'm resting a Trinidad Reyes stick in my humidor for later in the year).
nick2021 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Thx for sharing, have been back and forth on snagging a box of these.....may need to snag one based on your review!
hounser Posted April 11, 2015 Author Posted April 11, 2015 Thanks for the great review! Can you expound why the Trinidad Coloniales is one of your favourite sticks? The answer could be, 'just because' but I am curious as I've not sampled a Trinidad cigar before (although I'm resting a Trinidad Reyes stick in my humidor for later in the year). I'm an admitted fan of the Trinidad marca in general so it starts there but then the vitola is just right most of the time, I would love to just be smoking Fundadores all the time but sometimes it just doesn't fit into the schedule and I love Reyes as well but often you're left wanting more so the Coloniales size is that nice 1:15 smoke. Then I would say it's the complexity, I like when a cigar has a flavour you can count on but still surprises you with something different. A good example is with this '14 stick. I'm used to most of the flavours I was getting but the grassy notes I got off the start were not very common for me with this smoke. I'm generally a cigar smoker who likes different cigars all the time, never the same one two days in a row kind of thing. So, to be able to get subtle differences but from a stick you like the overall profile of is what makes me reach for a cigar more often then others. Thx for sharing, have been back and forth on snagging a box of these.....may need to snag one based on your review! I would recommend them for sure, I would always say the drawback is as oliverdst mentioned below, at a time when a whole lot of great cigars from '13 and '14 are smoking extremely well very young I think you will still find yourself needing to put these down for an extended amount of time to really fully enjoy them. My Coloniales hit the peak with 6 years old.
deejank Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 smoked too from APU FEB 14, they are really good, i love that vanilla/buttery goodness. Guess I should save the last 3 for at least another year huh? darn... 2
WhiteMamba Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 You sold me. I'll have to keep my eye out for these.
wade1979 Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Just finished one from APU JUL15. First one out of the box and I was really impressed with this little smoke. The first third took a bit to pop, but it really shinned in the back half. Lots of salted caramel and just a wonderful aftertaste. I haven't had them aged so I have no reference point, but damn this one was good. 1
TheMonk Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Very nice review, thanks for sharing. One of my current favorites, and definitely an unsung hero.
