Lant63 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Picked up a bottle of the eagle rare 10 today, what are the thoughts on that compared to the other lines from buffalo trace, as well as the eagle rare 17 btac? Sent by telepathic super powers -Stogie Boy
SofaKing Posted March 4, 2015 Author Posted March 4, 2015 I found a bottle of Elijah Craig 23 yr single barrel, any thoughts?
fokker4me Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I found a bottle of Elijah Craig 23 yr single barrel, any thoughts? I'm not a fan. In my opinion the EC 21 and 23 are over oaked. The sweet spot gof EC IMO is 18 years. That was truly a great bottle of Bourbon. I think in a time in the not so distant past it would have blended away into one of Heaven Hills big blend whiskeys, however with the ever rising demand for american whiskey, distilleries will bottle nearly anything with a big age. 1

Based on what I read briefly online it echoed what you stated. AT 215$ i will pass and continue looking for suggestions previously posted.

Sent by telepathic super powers -Stogie Boy Eagle Rare 10 is a good product. I remember buying it no to long ago for $22. a bottle now a good price is $ 29. a bottle. I still think its a great pour even at 90 proof. ER 17 is not my favorite product from the BTAC. Yo me it tastes like a smoother version of ER but while it has lost its burn and intensity it has also muted alot of flavor. Maybe if it was cask strength I would feel different about it but since its not I think its kind of lame for as sought after as it is. It is also not getting any older because it is tanked not bottled from a barrel just lime Sazerac 18 which I think is phenomenal whiskey.
SofaKing Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 Whistle Pig Boss Hog? I know its a rye and not wheated but I found two bottles for a decent price. Any thoughts?
fokker4me Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Whistle Pig Boss Hog? I know its a rye and not wheated but I found two bottles for a decent price. Any thoughts? It Is rye but not the rye you think of from the US. It is Canadian Rye a very different product. Personally it not my drink of choice and I think it is hardly worth the chase. I would not drink it for $25. a bottle.
SofaKing Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 Interesting, it received favorable reviews to the point of you absolutely need to buy this if you can find it, ie Pappy's. I will attribute it to marketing as you seem to have a vast knowledge on bourbon. I found a few bottles for 169$ which was well below the retail and was in my max budget.
jfire Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 One of the best bourbons currently that I drink bottles of is Russle's Reserve. Comes out of Wild Turkey. Cherry picked barrels @ 30 dollars a bottle never tasted so good. I've been drinking it over Blantons, WR Double Oaked, Rowan's creek, Pappy 15, CoL EH T single barrel, ER 10 and a few other more $40 plus bottles. It is by far the most delicious $30 dollar bottle on the market right now imo. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
KJND Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 To the previous Weller discussion, mix the Wellers! If you have or can access both the 12 and OWA, mix 50:50. To my taste buds for sipping neat the sum is better than the parts! I'll mix both 750's up at a time it's that good! For the EC crowd, HH will be re-releasing the 18yr old again this year. Put me in the group that will also take a WLW over Pappy's up to 20yr. I do enjoy the 20 year quite a bit. The 23's I've tasted has made the hunt for that no longer necessary. With all that said, when offered a Pappy 15 I still don't pass as long as it's MSRP. I don't mind Canadian ryes but not sure I would spring for the Boss. ER17 is a pass for me since 2012, same juice that I still have half a bottle left. Just doesn't do it for me. Saz 18 is my highest regarded BTAC and won't pass a single one up when I run across it. You may like it, but is just not for me. But to say buy it if you can't find pappy is crazy they are two compleatly different products. A wheated over aged bourbon and a over aged Canadian Whiskey. I hope you enjoy it though.
TM-US Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Whistle Pig Boss Hog? I know its a rye and not wheated but I found two bottles for a decent price. Any thoughts?Mediocre rye that is worth nowhere near what they ask for it. You're much better off with Rittenhouse, Sazerac, or find some E.H. Taylor rye.If you're going to search out rare rye, go find some Handy or Saz 18.

To reiterate my initial post I don't drink bourbon, I'm just looking for an above average/hard to find bottle for Easter for my father inlaw and couple other family members that are bourbon drinkers. Every opinion has been appreciated, I'm convinced that if you dont know a retailer or get on a list for when these things are released you are SOL!..unless you want to pay 5 to 10 times mrsp.

Other than Forged Oak (which just came out) and BTEC (careful, there are a lot of iterations), none of those are really available.
