CT Tobacco Museum

Recommended Posts

Finally made it over to the Connecticut Tobacco Museum. (located in Windsor CT) It's located in two buildings, one being an old (refurbished) drying barn. Most of what they have in there is old tools and machines used in the growing and harvesting of the tobacco. Not much about cigar manufacturing. Most growers didn't even ferment their own tobacco. That was usually only cured, bundles and sold to the cigar manufacturers. They would do the fermenting.

The smaller building is more smaller items and a small library of related old books, pictures, etc.

It was really interesting for me seeing I now live in this area but didn't grow up here. I was a bit ashamed of not knowing more about the CT tobacco industry when people would ask me questions about it, knowing that I'm a cigar smoker. Now I'm more informed.

Beautiful location. It's located on an old farm, surrounded by old fallow fields. Quite a few (unused) old tobacco barns on the property. Nice place to sit in the shade and enjoy a smoke with my girlfriend.

One sad fact I took away is that at one time (1920's), aprox. 30,000 acres were planted. Today, it's just under 2,000.

As requested: Here are some pictures.

St. Louie:

No. Nothing for sale. All the tobacco there is for display only. It looks like it's about 50 yrs old and stays out in the barn year round. A little longer than the usual 6 -8 weeks it's left hanging to cure.

I had to bring my own. I just didn't tell them it was a CC.
