Popular Post El Presidente Posted July 26, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 26, 2014 I was reminded today of the simple beauty of Junior sport. I took my youngest Tom to his 8A basketball game for his school team. Lucky 1 point win and they were thrilled. School song sung loudly by the lads at the end of the game. No hubris....just pride in their success. I watched them as they shook the hands of the apposition post game. Genuine appreciation and respect for the contest. He then dressed into school uniform and we drove to the Rugby games the school was playing today. I helped out coaching some juniors, good coffee, watched plenty of games culminating in the First XV kickoff at 2:15. Crowd would have been 3000 people. There is a simple goodness about Junior/School sport. They play for the right reasons, for their mates, for their school. good sportsmanship abounds + plenty of smiles even in defeat. Sometimes we take life too seriously. Great day 5
shlomo Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 I've been refereeing, umpiring and coaching basketball and baseball for 15 years now. MOST kids are great. Too many adults are assholes. 1
thecapo Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 I too enjoy junior sports. I am 42 with 2 boys under 10 years of age. I coach baseball for one recreation league and assist with travel baseball. Times have change since I have play youth sport but never the less it is a great feeling when a student or player says "thank you coach". I will be honest, I am the one that should be thankful. To all the parents for letting me coach, teach, train and discipline their child in order to see them move to the next level and blossom into a better individual and athlete. We live vicariously through our children and even know we teach them they also teach us in return!
ogus Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 You let him play hoops not rugby. Wisdom through experience?
perkinke Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 I used to love coaching soccer, but the parents got to be too much. The little kids were so much fun because they just wanted to learn and play, while when I was an assistant coach for a high school those guys were fun because they were really coming into their own and starting to play the game the way it is meant to be played.

bradbrennan Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 I was reminded today of the simple beauty of Junior sport. Sometimes we take life too seriously. Great day Speaking of taking life to seriously...interesting how adding or taking away an "s" on the end of sport/sports can change it's meaning depending on where you live, as one of our presidential candidates learned not so long ago
El Presidente Posted July 28, 2014 Author Posted July 28, 2014 You let him play hoops not rugby. Wisdom through experience? He loves both but they clashed this year at his school. He had to pick one over the other. He is a far more talented basketball player
